Well i decided to upgrade my trusty ol Q6600 to a new 45nm Q9550. I will have it at the house when i get home tonight, looks like ill be busy for a couple days playing with my new toy, seeing how high i can get the overclocks to go. It should be fun, i am going to start with using the current 32 bit Vista i have already installed and then install Vista 64 bit and see what the performance difference is. Ill probly disassemble my whole rig and give a well deserved cleaning and water cooling flush with new liquid. Ill post a pic of the beauty later before i take everything apart.
Very Happy Cant wait to get started Wink

Why don't you overclock your Q6600 to 4x 3.00 GHz?

I did it with mine.
Q6600 ---> QX6850 for $0.00 Smile

Well Qwerty i run it at 3.4 every day since the day i first got it. Im going to try and get this one closer to if not over 4Ghz , which i have seen is very possible since i run it under water cooling, and with the 2 8800GTXs i have in Sli i cant wait to see what its like for gaming, i have read it will make a big difference because of the giant L2 cache.

First off i have the old stepping on my Q6600, which isnt that great , second off the Q9550 is 45nm so it will run cooler right off the bat. That leaves me much more room to overclock it to an insane level compared to my Q6600. But as usual with any chips it up the the individual chip as to how well it will overclock, but the main big advantage is the huge 12 meg L2 cache.

btw...u use all the prossecing ability of this cpu?
q6600 or either q9550?

i ask u becoause i use my pc for unbiased renderings and generaly extremely high calculculations of viz purposes-programs...

so i use 100% of eatch core of eatch Mhz of my rig..
are u really need this perform ?
its a retoric question to every overclocker around...
or overclock just for numbers???

Smile

friendly....Mike

Yes i do , i run an SMP program Called Folding @ home , which simulates protien folding in the human body that replicates what the protiens in our bodys are doing when they go wrong, when a protien misfolds it basically becomes a human illness, like cancer or alzhiemers disease. This program i run uses 100% of all cores simutainuosly and stresses any cpu to the full extreme. Even more so than Prime 95 or any of the other stress testing programs that are out there. But for normal every day use i dont think many people use there CPUs power to its fullest, especially since not to many programs are desighned to take advantage of mylti cores yet. Just think about Amd and 64 bit CPUs, i have had 6 or 8 of them and never once used a 64 bit o/s or program with them. And even if i didnt i like to see how far i can push hardware to its limits. And maybe have a few bragging rights Wink

I also use BOINC - ClimatePrediction
I'm in the SetiGermany team.

I like my Q6600 because of it high (9x) multiplier.

The motherboard I have supports up to 1333QDR FSB officially. It should be possible to go up to 1800 FSB with it, but because I want a stable system I never tried to run my CPU with that FSB. Smile

Yea the high multis are nice, this will have a 9.5 multi. My board also supports 1333, but i run it higher than that already with the Q6600, so i should have no problem cranking this puppy up way above what i can with the 6600, plus it runs way cooler as well wich will help the o/c as well. But like you it must be stable for me to leave it like that for 24/7 use, ill find the max and then back it down a little to insure its stable. I also run two instances of the GPU client for my two 8800gtxs, altho it heats up the room a bit.

Oh yea i fold for EOCF. We do what we can for the cause.

Are you really sure the new CPU will have 9.5 multiplier?

According to this page the Q9550 has a 8.5 multi.

ERRR my bad , youre correct 8.5, which still isnt bad tho.

Even with tis multi , i have seen lots of people getting 4 gig out of these on air cooling, so it will be fun no matter what.

yeah, I think hitting 4 gig on it shouldn't pose too big of a problem, especially when watercooling that >95 Watt TDP Smile
And I'm still stuck with my Pentium-M Smile

Chiefish,

Good Luck with your new CPU. I just spent the night installing and tuning a new motherboard for my #1 computer.

FWiW, I've been doing the Folding @ Home deal for a few months. I also have a technologically antique Athlon 64/socket 754/3200+ OC'd to 2.75GHz which 'folds' 24/7. It's not very fast, but it's reliable.
