I had some IBM 9117 P570 Power5 and Power5+ processor modules
come into my warehouse. I haven't taken a heat sink off yet to see
what they look like. Anyone know what they look like??

( 4 ) IBM 03N5689 1.5Ghz 2-way Power5 processors
( 7 ) IBM 10N7709 1.9Ghz 2-way Power5+processors
( 6 ) IBM 80P5161 1.5Ghz 2-way Power5 processors
( 8 ) IBM 80P5240 1.5Ghz 2-way Power5 processors

The processor modules are on the left of the cases with two per case.

the processor modules slide out of the big racks, then the 2 halves come apart with several screws (torx IIRC)

Heat to desolder chip from board and heat to remove heatsink

OK. I was wondering if I had to take the bottom board
out as I wasn't seeing a way to easily take the side panels
off so I could get to the big heat sink.

Thanks!

I finally have one that I can take apart. The board is free
and out of the metal case but I may still need to use the
heat gun to get the big heatsink to come off the chip.

Hopefully, I will have some pictures of what my Power5
looks like later tonight. Cool

heatsink is usually held on by a single screw through a plate on the bottom of the PCB

Then there are one or 2 heatspreaders covering the die, held on with a silicon based glue. These are what need heat to remove.

Yeah, the big heat sink came off with just a little heat.
The two "ying and yang" heat spreaders were a bear to get off
but they did finally come loose. Smile

Here is what the IBM Power5 chips that I have look like.
I haven't cleaned it yet but she still looks like a beauty!
I am guessing that it is a 1.9Ghz two-way processor.

Looks to be POWER5 rather then POWER5+ (die sizes are diff)

only speed you can know is that of the module (using the part number on the metal casing)

Each chip wasnt really rated for a particular speed, only a max, and slapped into any module less then or equal to that
