I'm now curious, how would a Pentium Pro deal with a newer gpu and games in such platform? Like a GeForce FX 5900/5950 or a GeForce 6800 card, I believe on a Pentium Pro, you are limited to forceware 77.72 and 78.05 at best iirc
Good job in that article |

Just a tiny discrepancy: Was it actually 1.5 or 2 GiB memory supported?
| Quote: | In addition to all of the above, the VIA Apollo Pro133A chipset supported up to 1.5 GB of RAM, versus only 1GB for Intel 440BX, and this memory functioned asynchronously with respect to the system bus. Besides, the RAM frequency could be 33 MHz higher than the FSB frequency. In subsequent VIA chipsets for the Socket 462 platform for AMD Athlon processors, this solution with asynchronous bus operation continued to be used with good success.
In addition to these main differences, there was also support for hardware monitoring, and a doubled number of supported USB ports, as well as the presence of an AC’97 audio codec. What happens if you put all these technologies into an ASUS motherboard? The answer is ASUS P3V4X.
ASUS P3V4X – VIA Apollo Pro 133A
So, what is the ASUS P3V4X motherboard? The ASUS P3V4X motherboard supports Intel Pentium II / III processors, four RAM slots make it possible to use 2GB of PC133 SDRAM, as well as Virtual Channel Memory. The motherboard has a universal AGP 4x slot, thanks to which you can install the fastest video accelerator from Nvidia – GeForce 7 series. 6 PCI slots and 1 ISA slot make it possible to connect any external expansion cards, including a tandem of a pair of 3Dfx Voodoo2 operating in SLI mode. |

I run an Apollo pro 133A with 2 GB RAM, system is an MSI 694D Pro2, dual P3 1000EB @ 1107 MHz (FSB 147), 2 GB PC133 @ 147 MHz (1:1 DRAM:FSB ratio), Geforce 4 Ti 4600 and Windows XP Pro

Forgot to mention, would be also interesting to see dual Socket 8 on the VIA Apollo Pro 133A platform like the Tyan S1834D, later Intel chipset like Intel 815E (on slot 1 i815 like the Abit SH6) or even RDRAM platforms like the Intel i820 (eg ASUS P3C, P3C-E and P3C-D) |

Really cool!
Can it run Windows 7 with Aero? Afaik no Socket 8 motherboard have Acpi so using such Slotket would be the only way to run Windows 7 on a Pentium Pro... _________________ Stelo.xyz Museum (CPU Collection and more) |
