I'm wondering what is the best way of cleaning CPUs. I'm using aceton, anybody experienced any negative effect of this? Is there a better way of cleaning the CPUs?

Old beer.

no .. only joking... I used MEK* ( Methyl Ethyl Ketone ), that takes off most of the pen marks, writing, grease, glue residue etc. For some sticky labels I use a piece of plastic and gently take most of the label off, then use the solvent to remove the residue.
A good lint free cloth is also good.

* its nasty, and I have a workshop environment to handle it in. So only use this if you have both sides of your brain correctly wired. Not that I do, but I think it is icon_crazy

you could of course BOIL your cpu. Wink

yeah good point. I think its expensive, and also hard to find in large qty.

BUT.. it is used as the main solvent in plastic plumbing. They dont call it MEK, it just called a plastic pipe cleaner, or De-greaser. You use it to wipe the grease from the plastic pipe then apply the pipe cement ( glue ). If you look on the small print of the label I bet it will say MEK Wink Then it is cheap.

Embarassed when I was like 6 ( some say I still am Wink ) I used to think a rubber was magic, and when you rubbed pencil markings and also those pen "rubbers" that actually removed the paper a bit, that the removed writing went into the rubber. - which it does technically .. hehe

what about a dogs tongue.

bulldogs for 68000,
huskies for 8080
and chihuahuas for 4004.

lol

to be serious, i have a gold cleaning set for jewellry.
i did a test last year: i put a rusty chip in for one day, later i could rub off the rust from the gold lid with my fingernails.
the suspendend thing was: will the chip get rusty again and maybe faster then before?
answer: no, it looks still as pretty as last year.

so this is my preferred method for my rusty chips.

i use acetone ans benzine as well for other purposes.

cheers, michael

There are three things I use for cleaning CPU's

1. IPA Solvent (Isopropol Alcohol I think). Works great for removing most gunk.

2. A small PCB brush for removing dust

3. A Homemade scraping tool, made from a flexible piece of perspex wedged into a machine file handle. This is great for removing stickers and heavier gunk without ruining your nails/cpu

I've got some new tools for cleaning CPUs.

1) A Stanley knife
2) An electric sander

and if they fail, I always have:

3) A kettle Smile

Then of course, there's the universal toolkit, good for all those small tasks:

4) A hammer (in this case, a 4lb sledgehammer!)

Once I have used these tools, I never expect to have another problem with the chips Smile

Beleive it or not, I have seen a number of chips that looked like they had been treated with all of the above tools!
