35% HCL Hydrochloric then dilute 1 part acid to 5 parts water
then using a open weave cloth apply to surface
leave a few minutes then wash off
if metal traces still present.. do again
just keep the acid away from any solder (like for die cap) as it will darken its colour _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

Thanks for info. normally I do not want to touch any acid including HCL etc.. because it is dangerous when kid around... , so I never try this, but maybe can try in future
another question, how do you protect the printing on the vintage gold top chip, like 4004 4040 etc. specially for chips with some rust points already on gold top.
I tried with some kind of derusting solvent on some chips for test, so far there is no damage on the printing.
Do you have other good way? _________________ **********************

very tricky if there is any rust points already
personally I wouldn't use any acid based products if the plating has started lifting
at best metho (denatured alcohol) just to give the chip some sort of cleaning. _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

I'd have to say that $20.56 USD was quite worth it for that chip. What a find!
Congrats! |

Well I timed myself and the process of wiping down with dilute acid, washing, cleaning in denatured alcohol and blow drying chip
from this
to this took me under 4 minutes _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

What ever marked the chip had only left a layer and not scrapped any of the ceramic away
Even in bright sunlight I cannot see where the marks were, but I have had chips where the marks don't show in photos but do still in bright sunlight
Until you remove the scrape layer, you won't know if marks will be still there or not _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

Ok, this is what I want to know as I remember you said you have chips that marks don't show in photos but do still in bright sunlight

amazing work stu,
probably this is the correct way that IC dealers refurbish used chip into NOS state. _________________ My vintage CPU collection:www.cpumuseum.com
