slightly off topic: if i remember correctly i had a pentium with probabably not intentionally 3 broken pins which was working - good idea for new record topic probably
btw i dont think they are fake - but i have no clue what they really are - maybe the laser doing the markings was an eng sample - at least possible - im not able to understand many strange thing happening at intel from this time on |

it still make sense
maybe intel's QC find some SY016 has some problem
and remove them from the normal sale
after storing for month
the intel decide to have them to be remarked and treat them as sample
that explain why the production date (as SY016) not match with the serial number ( as Q056)
i can not remember the exact pentium price at that time
but i think it is the same as a core4 right now about 300USD-500USD etc (i do remember the price of my intel 486SX-20 : 120USD)
i think that is why they are not destroied ...
By the way , as i remember similar story happen 2 years ago (or a rumor ?)
there are some AMD athlon 64s not passing AMD's QC
the AMD's decide to destroy them but the order was not executed
these athlon 64s were remarked by someone as engineering sample
and then resold
here is a link writen in chinese
http://www.pconline.com.cn/news/hy/0601/749281.html
it say , they found a lot cheap AMD athlon 64 with strange serial number was sold in the chinese market
the reporter concluded that
1.they are possible samples for some MB company initially then remarked by the company and resold them ( they could earn 500USD per chip )
2.bad QC athlon64 and recycled by someone (AMD or not AMD)
maybe the Q056 SY016 has the same story

| Kind of looks similar to my q323's (crossed out original sl27s marking). They didn't pass spec at 233mhz so they were remarked qualification samples and sent to IBM (they work at 200mhz). I wonder if your Pentium is a similar story. |
