This brings up another dilemma... I document all fakes i get my hands on at chipdb.org and try documenting what makes them a fake and how to spot it. This so that future buyers can avoid buying fakes. Add to that our discussions here in the forum on specific chips and what makes them obvious as a fake.
This combined is a fakers handbook. For now we see porly made Pentiums from the 90:s, but JAC:s chip today shows that there are a economic interest in a fake. Lets say it was a A80501-50 (ES) that popped up instead? Has anyone seen one before? Nope. Good deep laser etching with perfect Intel print. (Two of the things most commonly made wrong on a fake) One for me please! $80? No problem.
So should we stop talking about fakes? Invite/postcount only forum?
Fakes are not CPU specific, how does other collecting communities do? _________________ My collection: http://www.cpucollection.se :::::: http://www.chipdb.org Photos of chips you never knew existed. Now over 6000 different chips in the database. |

I think it makes little difference if we talk about fakes or not. Those chips are out there already, and more will always be created. Besides, you will not stop everyone talking about fakes.
We can produce a guide on how to spot fakes, but in reality all you will do is assist someone prepared to make a lot of fakes for collectors. (Something I do not yet think has happened.. but it will soon.)
Fakes have been made for all time and will always be made. Remember the 386-pentium was, and is used in many many many applications. If there is the slightest hint of any demand then chips are "produced". This is, and always has been a big problem in commercial industry for ALL kinds of chips. |
