I`m using Ballistol for cleaning chips!
That`s a fir oil based univeral oil and it removes
pen-markings, thermal compound and
glue very efficient. Original prints stay and
gives the chip a neat shiny finish.
Smells like hell but the manual says
it`s so harmless that it can be used
to clean the ears of animals for example.....
and a warning not to blow directly
into the ear... _________________ Ordem e Progresso |

Who said that collecting cpus wasn't a hard man's job?? (spit of chewed tobacco - Jesse Ventura style) |
d-Limonene is natural and safe. |
...and having a sip of it while cleaning with solvents... "happy lemonade"
If I think of all the stuff I cleaned in a badly ventilated room... We are pioneers here! |

As I'm only new to collecting CPUs I haven't had to clean one yet, but from all our discussions it sounds like it's a fun thing to do! (well, okay, necessary and rewarding at least!)
So thermal paste and general cleaning looks like it'll be solved by ArctiClean, but I did notice I had a few chips like picur10 asked about. I'm guessing ArctiClean might not be "dangerous" enough to clean that up and acid was suggested, but can anyone suggest a specific product? (my fingers are crossed that ArctiClean will be all good!) Oh, and a secondary thing, can chips like this be restored back to a somewhat original state?

For chips like that, a scraping tool of some sorts might be useful. |

Okay, got it... I'm looking forward to seeing how well it all works out and how well they can be restored...
Thanks for the advice! |

I put the cpus for a couple of days in a fullfilled jar with alchool. If the label is made by plastic I do some little scratch on it with a cutter to allow the alchool to reach the glue. |

I scrape them off with a single edge Razor blade. |
