I think the C4004 w/gray traces has a lot going for it. It's a "1st" (high demand) and it's rare like new condition. That said, predicting the future value of collectibles is extremely difficult. How much is that Beannie baby someone paid $5000 for a few years back worth now:)

That's exactly right. But unlike what The_Mad said,

I'm still thinking C4004 is not a rare item. Expensive, for sure, but not rare.

Give me $500, and i will find you a C4004 today. Give me $5000, and i will not be able to find a Nexgen Nx686...

I wouldn't put it in terms of finding a cpu depending on the amount of money someone "gives" you.

What we have there is a perfect example of misconception. Why would it be expensive if isn't rare?? Im sure everyone agrees with me that a 3.2EE CPU is expensive; but it's high-priced for performance. You can pay roughly the same for a c4004 Grey. Now, are you buying this cpu for performance?? Then why is it this cpu is so expensive?

I saw not 2, 3 or 4 but 20+ C4004 Grey on eBay in the last year.

But you're right on something : there is 2 kind of collection :

1/ The biggest regarding the number and diversity of chips

2/ The biggest regarding the chips' worth.

I don't want a collection that can be bought only with many money. I want to spend time on searching the rare pieces

I try to get my hands on rare engineering samples and hard-to-get chips. Those are what I use to make money on and sell in the very near future; things I try to find or get good deals with so I don't end up with scratches on my "piggy" bank.
In this case it's different. The c4004 is what I'd like to call an "investment".

20 chips is a bit of an over-statement for c4004 greys. Maybe you meant C4004 regular.
But I think what we mostly have here is like saying "I couldn't reach the grapes! But who cares? They were sour anyway."

I mean C4004 Grey, like this (yet another) new one : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4193&item=5162489545&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW. A new C4004 spawn on eBay each week. one on three is a C4004 Grey. So, on one year, there is approx. ~20 C4004 Grey and 50 C4004 on ebay. I don't think it's a "rare" chip.

Statistics for statistics' sake:

Since I have been keeping track (end of September 2004), I have recorded 14 C4004s sold, of which 2 were greys.

Could have missed some tho' (but I don't think so)
