- they generate larger number of useless posts, that may add a lot to phpBB database size, and eventually make the database and the forum slower.
- they expose maximum prices that collectors are willing to pay. As a collector, I'm against it, as it gives wrong ideas to casual sellers. Dedicated sellers, of course, know how much they can get for items.
With that in mind, we can still have auction-type threads, but with one condition - old threads will be purged on regular basis. I can setup phpBB to purge auction threads that are older than one or two months. Or, like eBay, we can make it three months. I think that phpBB allows only per-forum purging, so we may need to create a new forum for auctions.

The only other thing would be for each person to PM a bid and then you have to PM everyone with the current bid. This is not feasable to do when the last of the bidding takes place. |

"For sale (auction links)" forum is now officially a "For sale (auctions and auction links)" forum. All auction-like threads, even if bids are submitted by PM, should be posted in that forum. On the plus side, the bidders can now openly bid in the thread.

At the risk of increasing my ever useless post count, I have my last $0.03 to throw into the hat on this subject.

Any active forum will eventually generate a large database, so I dont agree entirely with that point.
As for pricing I also dont agree. A quick google search will easily reveal the pricing, and indeed on this forum there are numerous threads with plenty of price comments.
I just think it is open to abuse, sockpuppets, fake bids and potentially non-existant items. Buyer beware!

Nope I have never had an account with Fleabay or Paypal. Just haven't had the need for it. My has them if I need to use one or I can set one up on them. And no I have never had problems with either one.
If there was a price structure to give to this chip I would not be doing this! |
Any price structure in place now for any chip is purely temporary, fluctating with supply/demand/gold scrap price. Example.. SX-16 486, years ago was fetching well over $100 a piece.. now, not so well. I am sure in time it will go up again. Same with many other chips.

It will grow much faster than selling of fixed-price items. In addition to original "for sale" post, fixed-priced sales will generate one or two posts (if the seller acknowledges the sale) per item. Auction-style threads have a potential to generate many more posts per item.

I could be subjective here.

Yes, it has greater risk to be abused, but so is bidding by PM. And selling at fixed price can be abused too...

Actualy I am going to keep that closed mouth. If the bidder want's it known and they give the Ok I will post it or they can post they have won the chip. I think that is only fair for this typr of auction.
The winner was bidder #1. |
