yeah I read the thread but nothign there "caught" me. I think the one real problem is waiting until small sections are "complete". I'll never be complete now since I extended to sspecs. *sigh*   |

I agree with the first 3 problems, have yet to look at a Xeon (I guess they must be thick as well), but the sex appeal? Does that mean that when I have built a decent storage and display cabinet I'll have all the local dykes banging at my door? Hmm - maybe I should get to work on it...

My first XEON was a ift, Wow, I tought it looked cool - I had 'for some reason' never sen one before! haha

1) the chips i have with heatsinks attached (overdrives, some cyrix, etc) i store seperately in a sheet of foam. those can go into trays like yours.
2, 3 & 4) slot chips, likewise, get stored seperately. i currentl stack them but ideally theyd be lined up beside eachother to reduce the chance of damage.
5) you lose that when you start collecting cpus.
6) i can imagine a 4004 falling out of the gap at the edge, but most chips stay inside. think of this, most of your trays hold 10 chips, and if you tip it up you drop 10 chips onto the floor. a cd case only holds a few of those, and they have a better chance of staying put.
as for additional benefits:
1) if youre showing them to someone, or looking at them, you can turn the case upside down to look at the underside of a chip without having to take it out or handle it
2) its protected on BOTH sides, not just the bottom. if something happened to fall on it accidentally it would scratch the case, maybe break it, but the chip would be fine, or at least would suffer less damage than if something fell directly on it, like with your exposed-top trays
3) theyre much easier to store. sure, you lose that 'everythings visible' effect, but if i want to fine a chip, i can go through an organized shelf full of chips like i would go through a library, find exactly what im looking for, and have it.. if i asked you to find a particular K6, its 4 rows back and youd have trouble getting back there to read the markings. since i can only fit 4 chips per case, i can be very specific about how theyre labelled, such as 'K6 166ALR'
everyones storage system has its own benefits. instead of arguing about whos is better, we should probably try to come up with some 'ultimate storage' that incorporates the best of everything. so i think ill start a new thread to that effect |
