I am in the process of creating my chip collecting website on my PC. Right now I am taking pictures of the chips and each chip will have a link to photo. Would like to plan on the collection to go up to 500 chips in the future. I have about a 100 to put online now. I was wondering if any of the experienced chip collecting web masters out there have any any advice about what features I should look for in a web host? Any gitcha's, gotcha's or do differents you ran into in putting up your own site? I am hoping to pay around $10/month and not have any pop-ups, spyware etc. I do not plan on running a forum. I have been researching web hosting providers on the net. Two questions I can think of to start with is how much bandwidth should I start with in GB/month and do those non-pop up Google ads really offset any significant amount of the hosting cost? Is $10/mo reasonable for what I want?
I also have a completely seperate idea for a dedicated chip trading site with photo's. Idea is to provide space for collectors to upload pictures of their trades and what they would like to trade for. Would not be an auction site. Just a way for collectors without web sites to get photos and contact info on the web for all collectors to see at once. Traders would contact each other to work out the details of the trade, and the site would have some sort of feedback tracking for traders to report good or bad trades. Hopefully site could be supported with a very small listing fee. Listings would expire in say 30 days to keep the site fresh. If any of the established web masters want to run with this idea please feel free. I will have a steep learning curve before being able to do this, but I am mechanical engineer and a building automation system programmer so I think I could climb the curve given the time and motivation. Any recommendations of software packages to develop this idea?
whatcha think?

I personally prefer UNIX/Linux hosting, I think it's more reliable than Windows-based hosting. Look for no-setup-fee hosting companies - if you don't like them you can easily switch to different provider. Look for their uptime guarantee - if they claim 99.99999% without any prove they are probably lying. Think of the features you may need in the future, and make sure you get them now, or you can upgrade to them without moving to different provider. Say, if you want to create the trading site then you will probably use or develop a software to do it. So, you may need PHP or perl, and MySQL.

Plan everything in advance. It takes more time, but it's much easier than moving pages around (and loosing visitors) when the site is online.
Don't just create pages in HTML editor - if you do this then changing site design will be almost impossible. Use either PHP/perl/other language to generate pages on the fly, or created HTML pages based on templates (DreamWeaver can do it, others can probably do too).

If you're going to put 100 - 200 pictures 50 - 100 KB each then a few GB/month will be more than enough.

This depends on the number of visitors.

Yes, you can get a lot for that money. I can recommend my hosting - site5. I'll give you two links - one is an link with my affiliate id:
http://www.site5.com/affiliates/idevaffiliate.php?id=70
and another without:
http://www.site5.com/
Look for Horsepower plan - it's 6.95$/month if paid one year in advance, or $9.95/month (paid monthly).

I had a similar idea, but I wanted to create "for sale" pages (like classifieds). I have a lot of spare chips, and I wanted to list some them for long period of time (one month or three months listings) for sale without paying fees to eBay or other auction site.

For that "for sale" idea I was thinking about using PHPauction (they have GPL version). It may work for your idea too.
