|
|
| I replaced my Celeron M 390 to a Pentium M 740. Everything went well, showing up as Pentium M 1.73Ghz on boot up screen, even with a Pentium M logo. But in Windows XP, ran cpuz, it's only running at 800mhz, with multiplier at 6 instead of 13. basically it's running at lowest frequency mode (core voltage = 0.988V). I tried all the power management setting, but won't change nothing. Tried powercfg.exe, with Processor Throttle set to NONE, but nothing would change. Can someone have any idea why is that? Any suggestion? Thanks. |

Speedstep, my friend.
Run CPUID's CPU-Z tool, and it can tell you whats really going on.
Windows isnt good at guessing processor speed. |

| as I said in my original post, ran cpuz already, as I said, tried all power saving setting, used powercfg.exe to set processor throttle to NONE, meaning not using speedstep. you just said something i already did and posted. |

Ah, for some reason I edited what I said about Prime-95.
Get Prime-95, and see what CPU-Z says about your CPU speed while it crunches.
Also, are you running on battery? Some computers are very stingy when on battery, and sometimes also when charging and when running on AC without the battery. If you system isn't plugged in, do so.
Option 3 is lack of BIOS support for the features of the PM Dothan, namely FSB533 and it's predicted thermal output. It's possible the BIOS's cpu init string reads the processor, but because it's Dothan (and not a previous generation, FSB400 and 1MB L2) but then doesnt know what to do with it's multiplier and FSB settings. So it runs at the pin-designated FSB (133Mhz x 4) and basically an empty multipler. I've seen weirder things.
Have you updated the BIOS to it's latest version, as well as the chipset? Maybe, perhaps, some previous utility you installed is still overriding the Windows power settings- Many mnfgr's have their own power regulation apps pre-installed.
Last and final bit- Run a linux-off-a-CD distro(Ubuntu, DSL, etc), and pull out your Windoze HDD before it boots. See what THAT has to say about your processor speed... That will tell you if it's BIOS (Linux shows the 800MHz speed) or Windows (Linux shows the correct 1.73GHz speed). |

|
|
| I think trying it with Linux is a great idea and will try that tonight. It was running with AC plugged in, so it's not battery related. I did upgrade it to the lastest BIOS, but you know, laptop BIOS is quite limited in term of what you can do with the setting. I hope it's just Windows, maybe a clean installation may help. I will try the Linux test first, if we determine it's Windows, then I can use a spare hard disk and do a clean installation. Thanks. |
