Will act as server, running a single-threaded application which tends not to use much processor horsepower, but eats RAM to absurd quantities.

My thoughts:
P4 has more L2 but less frequency.
Celeron has more frequency, but less L2.
P4 has better energy saving features.

Will be equipped with 2x 1GB DIMMs DDR-400.

What do you guys think?

If you want more frequency from the P4 can you manage to overclock it?

I guess that the P4 is better than the Celeron, even if the freq is higher for the latter, plus you get all the power saving features with it, and that's a reason good enough to use the P4-M. L2 is bigger.

No, no overclocking Very Happy It's a possibility, but it's really a mobile platform... It's a laptop motherboard outside of the laptop Razz

I suppose I'll stick with my P4-m. I thought it might be better, if just for less power use.

I think P4M 2G is better fot you.

If your heatsink is good enough you can upgrade the processor to P4-m 2.5G for higher performance and good power saving(when run at 1.2G).

Just got my hands on a 2.2 P4-M Very Happy Exuberance!

But yeah, decidedly, the Celeron is inferior.

Thanks for the input!

What I'd really like is a Low-Voltage P4-M Very Happy But I can use what I have... Maybe volt-mod the motherboard.

Oh, I do Very Happy

The heatsink is the best feature of this unit- I am going to bend it around and turn the laptop mobo into an embedded computer. It's too bad it's a bit large, about as small as the smallest mATX board I have seen (not ITX).

But the board is flat, supports 2 FLAT Desktop DDR DIMMs, and a P4... I have a 3.2/533 which will hopefully work with it, if I need more power... But in the mean time, the system is more likely going inside a very flat networking-eqpt case.
