I have been having problems with my computer. A month ago the power supply fan died and the power supply burned out. I replaced it and now the CPU is acting funny. If I put in an installl disk for any program, the CPU shows 100% usage and stays there, forever. When I close the install program it goes back to 0-1%. Almost any task puts the CPU to max. I tested the memory with memtest and its fine. I replaced the motherboard and that didn't work.

Is it possible to have a CPU go partially bad. Where even the smallest task pushes it to its limit? I have an Athlon XP 2200+ processor and 512 MB memory, and XP. I will get a new processor if this is the problem. Thanks

Am I right that the OS boots and works fine, it hangs only when you try to start any other tasks?

Yes, it's possible. If one of processor units that is not used by OS (for example MMX/3DNow/SSE) is damaged then you notice it only when you run applications that use features associated with that unit (MMX/3DNow/SSE instructions). You already ruled out the motherboard and memory. Did you rule out the OS? If you have another OS installed on the computer, or if you have a Knoppix CD or even an old DOS disk see if they work on your system. Also, try to disable L2 cache in BIOS and see if it fixes the problem.

Its definitely not the motherboard, I didn't spend hours testing the memory, a few passes with memtest. The OS had worked previously, and I did a format and a complete reinstall. Not quite sure how to disable the L2 cache, I've looked through the manual but see no reference. I'm going to try other memory, if I can, to see if this might be the problem, otherwise I may have to try a new CPU.

One of my AMD Durons got chipped when I fiddled on mounting the waterblock. It actually got chipped several times, when it lost a large chuck in one corner the L2 cache died. It worked if I disabled L2 cache on the motherboard, but not with it enabled. So a Duron can certainly be partially bad / defect.

A Duron is a Athlon with half the cache deffective and/or disabled.

So you just disabled the rest of it Smile
