Hey, I got for free from a friend a motherboard with cpu socket 462, and a cpu chip w/ heat sink and fan that is socket 7. Am I able to use the two together in my PC rebuild?

the short answer is NO

the socket 462 is also called "socket A". u will need a AMD Duron, Athlon or some of the Athlon XP processor for the board.
Socket A boards have been around along time. so u will need to identify what board it is to confirm exactly what processor u can use

When u find out what board it is.. check out here http://www.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5573
