Hi!

I am looking into upgrading my Dell Dimension 8100 to a faster processor. I currently have a 1.3 GHz Intel Pentium 4 and I don't exactly know what I need to purchase for maximum speed and full compatibility with my current motherboard/cooling/system/socket type/memory/chipset, etc.

Can any "expert" help, Plz?

Current Processor info:
Processor Name: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1300MHz
Type: 0
Family: F
Model: 0
Stepping: 7
Revision: 12
L1 Trace Cache: 12 Kµops
L1 Data Cache: 8 KB
L2 Cache: 256 KB
Packaging: OOI
EIST: No
MMX(TM): Yes
SIMD: Yes
SIMD2: Yes
SIMD3: No
Enhanced Halt State: No
Execute Disable Bit: No
Expected Processor Frequency: 1.30 GHz
Reported Processor Frequency: 1.30 GHz
Expected System Bus Frequency: 400 MHz
Reported System Bus Frequency: 400 MHz

If additional info is needed, plz ask.

Thanks!

I'm not an expert, but I'll try to help. Your motherboard is for socket 423 Pentium 4 processors, and that socket is dead. You can do one of two things:
  • upgrade to 2 GHz Pentium 4 CPU - the fastest for socket 423. Part number for boxed processor is BX80528JK200G, S-Spec numbers are SL5TQ and SL5SZ (there may be others).
  • buy a PowerLeap PL-P4/N adapter together with socket 478 Pentium 4 processor. It'll be more expensive, but you can upgrade to faster Pentium 4 processor. You can use only processors with 400 MHz FSB with this adapter!
Just in case, this is a link to technical specifications for your system:

Thanks a lot for the "expert" info. Wink
This confirms what I just found on the Intel website while waiting for a reply to this post!
Thanks also for the info about the socket upgrade. Smile
...This should give me more options.

Again, thanks for all.

yes socket 423 is dead. as for upgrading, i think socket 423 does not support northwood p4s (512 L2). you might need the 478 adapter for that. also, if your systems ram is not ddr, i would not put the money into the 478 adapter and faster cpu. from the systems taht i have benchmarked, i have noted the non-ddr sdram puts a bottleneck on the pentium4. its kind of a waste of money to go above 2ghz because non-ddr systems cant even use the 2ghz+ cpus anything near to what they are capable of. so unless you have ddr or rdram, i would just upgrade it to a 423 2ghz.
