I downloaded this windows 7 beta, and i must say, it is pretty good, even for a beta 
Anyone else tried it out here ? |

Anything would be better than Vista. Never seen such a pile of crap. I can't even get it running stable with just Vista, MS Office and IE and they are all MS products. Ahhhh!
I really hope they get it right next time

Really???? That's pretty odd, I have vista ultimate and it seems to be better and faster than XP. But that's probably the quad core/sli gtx280's talking

Yep, I'm running ultimate on a qx9550, 4GB & 4870 card. I get hangs in IE, Excel 2007 and I've even had a couple of reboots. Been running it for 3 months now and wished I had gone with XP. I use it in my business every day - but I'm not alone in criticism of how poor it is.
On a second machine in my business we are running an E8400, 4GB and 4850, with ultimate again and it also hangs in IE and Excel, so it's not machine dependent. Very annoying.  |

I've got the same cpu and the same ram, but I think I forgot to mention mine is the 32bit vista ultimate  I haven't found a reason to go 64bit yet, especially since software makers can barely keep up with hardware made 5 years ago. Vista ultimate can open a connection with almost any hardware automatically without any drivers, and does a lot of other "handy" things too. that's one of the main reasons I switched from XP. Multi-tasking is a breeze, I opened as many processes as I could at the same time and it still gamed with no problem

I didn't dare go with 64bit - too much risk on drivers etc for a business (even thought I would love to). Nope, I'll just play the waiting game for the next version or hope that the next service pack in march will fix most of the issues I am having

That's extremely strange.. you have vista ultimate 32bit but you're still crashing???? There must be some kind of error around there somewhere, I have it installed on my laptop as well (which is only centrino duo) and it holds up just as well. I think mine has a service pack installed which fixes the issues you're having, why don't you give that a shot?

It is strange. If it was happening on just one machine, then I could point at hardware as a possible problem, but on two?? Both are fully up to date with the latest service pack, updates and drivers, so it is a real mystery

I use Vista Ultimate X64 SP1 and it isn't possible to run faster than XP on same hardware. I like Vista because actually drivers for my hardware are better for Vista x64 than for XP (more stable). All is running on x64 and that is great. I recommend update to SP1 - works much faster.

I use Vista Ultimate 32Bit at work. 
I've never seen such a crap before!
It's terrible - the windows explorer crashes from time to time especially when I browse a directory with many small files in it. SP1 and all recent patches are installed, but they don't help much.
I also discovered some bugs in this "would be OS". When I rename a file in windows explorer during "group by" sorting option is enabled - the file can disappear from window just after renaming. Only if I refresh the window it will be displayed again. I thought I've deleted a file by mistake when I saw the bug for the first time!
Sometimes I dare to copy files - it takes AGES! If I'm inserting files to a zip archive it takes about 30 minutes to compress 50 MB of data!!!! If I use an external compressing tool like WinZip it takes only 1 minute on the same PC (Intel code duo + 2 GB ram).
The last but not least nuisance is the *#&%! UAC. Because of this "improvement" it's not possible to use the computer as a normal user with limited set of rights! Vista asked me for admin password by every small occasion like changing the screen resolution! The UAC bothers me even after I got administrator privileges for my PC. |

When Vista came out I bought a laptop.
Had Vista Home premium on it, before SP1 it would have lots of BSODs and random video driver errors, other issues with network, random usb disks unmounted etc (never understood what it was, but nvidia drivers were indicted).
When crappy Nvidia drivers were corrected, SP1 and all came out, any Office app would not stop to crash randomly.
I'm not speaking of downloaded software, but 100% legal stuff...
Good thing is the vid driver wouldn't crash always to a bsod, but vista repairing it is great.
Lots of better stuff after SP1, but Office crashing is just a joke... let's hope in "7". |
