I'd like to upgrade my 5-6 year old computer with a higher level socket 478 CPU.

I have a P4 2.4ghz B (Northwood) running on an Asus P4P800S motherboard. The motherboard has 800mhz fsb, supports HT and I have the ram maxed out at 2gb DDR400. Before I had 1gb of DDR226 ram... doing the ram upgrade I noticed an overall performance increase right away.

If I upgrade to a P4 3ghz E, with HT (prescott), how much performance difference will I see, compared to the 2 years older, slower P4 2.4ghz B ?

Go here:

tomshardware . com/us/

go to Cpu charts (Charts tab at the top of the page).

Compare the two.

My perosnal guess is that the performance gain will be lower than upgrading ram, depends on what you use your pc for. If you have some Office windows open, music, browser and a lot of other programs, it'll feel smoother.
If you do cpu intensive stuff, it'll take less time (because of frequency gain).

It'll be hotter...

As for prices look on ebay for a quick reference, you'll get a general idea of prices.
