Hi there CPU-lovers!

I need your help please.

I have an 450mhz Pentium 3 slot 1 in my PC. I bought a second hand 800mhz Pentium 3 slot 1 and fitted it to my motherboard.

Unfortunately all I get when I switch on the PC is 4x loud beep from the motherboard and that is it, nothing happens

I looked at the part numbers (thanks to the great part number indentification section on this site!) I know the voltage is slightly different.
The 450mhz = 2.0v
The 800mhz = 1.65v

Can the difference in voltage be the reason it does not work?
Do I need to get some kind of adapter?

Thanks in advance for your help!

we will need the model number & make of the motherboard

but u may just need to reset the bios back to defaults for it to accept the new processor

just did a quick check of supported processors on the intel site

http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/se440bx2/sb/cs-013634.htm

a 600MHz needs bios version of P12
i presume its 512 not 256kB cache 600MHz P3 u have?

here is the main site for the board, while i look at possible reasons

http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/se440bx2/

thought this might help also (in FAQ section)

Quote:
How should the jumpers be set on my Intel SE440BX-2 Motherboard?
Unlike some previous Intel motherboards, the Intel SE440BX-2 Motherboard supports a single header (J8A1) which selects the configuration mode for the BIOS Setup program. This allows all motherboard configuration to be handled in software via the Setup program. There are three functions which can be selected by this jumper:

Function
Jumper J8A1 Configuration
Normal 1-2 The BIOS uses current configuration information and passwords for booting.
Configure 2-3 After the POST runs, Setup runs automatically. The maintenance menu is displayed (processor speed is set in this mode).
Recovery none (jumper removed) The BIOS attempts to recover the BIOS from a floppy disk. A recovery diskette is required.

Note There are no special jumpers for configuring the processor speed or bus frequency. Set the processor speed in the Setup program using Configure mode.

Caution The jumper settings should never be changed while the system is powered on. Always turn off the computer before changing the jumper.

from motherboard spec update

When upgrading the processor, use the BIOS configuration mode to change the processor speed

not all revisions of se440bx2 support coppermine CPU, and a BIOS update is often needed;

see the following page on intel's site for full CPU compatibility details, and compare with your board's revision and BIOS version:
