For my beast of a nixie tube clock. 16 tubes of nixie goodness. It's almost finished.
Calling it a nixie tube clock is a bit pedestrian. I have had a think through the Chronotron NixieMax MegaTron ULTRA 3L33t++ type names and it just doesnt seem right.
So I have three choices....
1) Dont call it anything at all on the faceplate artwork. .. then people will look at it and ask what it is.. I guess the incrementing count and clock like display will eventually be apparent to most bipedal humanoids. Sober ones at that.
2) Call it a clock related name .. or something time related, running the risk of sounding cheesier than a double cheese burger, with extra cheese.
3) Call it something completely unrelated to clocks. Maybe invent a brand name.
I am tending to option (1) at the moment.. but really, it looks a little bland .. it needs something on the artwork around the tubes.
so.. any thoughts, abuse, comments, suggestions, etc.. you want to throw my way.. please do!
Thank you. |

How about the Tubeinator or Timeinator or The Time Traveller, or The Uber Rare one of a Kind Meganix. IF you wanted to leave it plain maybe you could etch or engrave some scrolling or somthing on the out side borders to make it look a little more fancy. _________________ "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." Here ya go....
Ok, its not the greatest clock, it is overkill, but as I seem to have perfected the art of starting stuff and never finishing, this is not a bad effort.
The design was never intended to be compact, just versatile. I can drive all sorts of stuff.. more to come...
Anyway.. enjoy...

Edit: For me, video looks better in firefox than in IE.

| Some good names. Thanks. Once its finally assembled into the case, there will be a piece of artwork trim to go on the front panel. I'll put a name there. |

It looks about 100x better in front of you. When it is completely finished in the case I'll do another video with something better than a small pocket recorder.
I spent many .. many.. many hours. As a starting point, the very first work was started about 5 years ago. First with decoding the time signal ( I like clocks to maintain their own time). This is actually the 2nd generation. I had another clock I almost finished, but didnt like the tube interface, so I did it all over again. Long periods of time went by when I didnt do anything on the clock... overall I would say I have spent about 3-4 weeks on it, but that includes time spent getting to grips with learning more programming and experimenting with various chips and ideas.
I chose the 16 tube idea because I could use the posts in the tube as colons, and I havent seen another clock like it. Lots of generic simple clock circuits out there. Yah its ok to "assemble" a kit you buy, but much more fun to totally build it up from nothing. I have plenty of code space to put a ton of stuff in there to keep the tubes busy. The circuit is actually massive overkill for simple numeral nixie tubes. I designed it to work with multisegment tubes/led arrays/vfd's etc.. they offer more options. |
