Soon I will be traveling to middle east primarily for a conference and some other research related work.
Lately I have this habit of checking junkyards, recyclers and other various "e-waste" related companies that are located in the vicinity of my destination, hoping to find new pieces for my collection.
As I was doing the same thing again, I came across this place and I have a good feeling about this one... I believe I will end up digging the piles that are shown below within several weeks.
If you notice anything out of ordinary, please let me know. Unfortunately these are the best pictures available for now. I am hoping to take decent pictures over there, if they allow me to do so.
cheers |

lessons i learnt from going to my metal recycler
1) make a list of early CPU parts numbers u arnt familar with..plus another non-cpu chips that are sort after. << not an easy task
2) all that is white, purple or gold is not always worth grabbing especially if have limited time. (i would guess the purple & gold ones i can see are memory)
3) take boxes (or whatever) suitable to store chips for the trip home
4, 5, 6 & 7) take gloves.. the old boards have freakn sharp pins sticking thru them
looking at what is there.. n knowing how long it took me to go thru my metal recyclers stuff... my guess u would need 2 days to go thru it all if u were prepared _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

scrap_3 looks like a major health and safety risk Take a crane!
Looks like there will be some good stuff there. I'd wear a dust mask too judging by 'scrap_2' |

So, you need some extra delagates and researchers right? I'm OK in economy class, and I'll have the non-vegetarian meal thanks |

Thank you for your comments and suggestions guys.
The conference will be held in middle east technical university, located in Ankara, Turkey.
Most likely I won't have more than couple of hours for this visit, meaning that I won't be able to go through the whole pile.
I will make a list of make a list of early CPU part numbers, that sounds like a good idea and will target CPUs first. I will try to find a pair of heavy-duty gloves as well(thanks Neon-WA)
Any further suggestions are appreciated |

So the scrap yard / recycling centre has accepted you to go and fondle this stuff? If so, thats very nice of them!
You're gonna have to work at lightning speed to get that done in 2 hours. I just got back from my recycler and spent about 2 hours and just took the PCBs away to process, never mind take the CPUs off in situ.
My advice would be to ask 'where are the oldest boards/' because it looks like that stuff has accumulated over several years. That probably means the oldest (and best) stuff is at the bottom! |

First time I went to the metal recylers, it looked like i had been shaking hands with Edward Scissorhands

not sure if u have developed a technique for removing chips, but I always carry three screwdrivers where ever i go just in case I come across some chips to pull.
Seeing u dont need to open any cases.. u dont need a philips head, so i would suggest taking these two screwdrivers.
a thin shaft flat with narrow handle (to remove Dips, levering one end slightly then working the screwdriver completely under)
a wide bladed flat with fat handle ( to lever PGA chips from the board, prising one edge at a time a little more, by turning the screwdriver)
It takes a little bit of practice to remove chips without bending any legs, so worth trying on some crappy chips first.
Also makes sure they are good quality tool steel, as cheap ones bend easily & leaves marks on the chips
and remember dont put the screwdrivers in ur hand luggage... otherwise u mite not make ur flight _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:
