Toshiba A15-S129
Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz - RH80532NC056256 (Socket 478 (mPGA478B) according to CPU World)
Socket label on motherboard: mPGA479M
I would like to upgrade but I have no idea what will work since the processor that came stock is a socket 478 and is clearly sitting in a socket 479 motherboard. I have tried one processor which was a Pentium 4 548 3.33 GHz (socket 478) and it didn't work. I would like to get the fastest CPU that will work in my socket. The Dothan family seems to be pretty good.
One more confusing piece of info is my CPU is rated at 2.4 GHz and CPU World says the socket 479 can only handle up to 2.33 GHz. Toshiba even offered a 2.5 GHz version of this processor.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

There is a lot of confusion arround Socket 478 & 479. Actually there are 5 kinds of Socket 478, all electrically and mechanically incompatible. But, The Socket 479M, is compatible mechanically with all of them. So it can be use by laptop assembler for any cpus, Pentium III Mobile, Pentium 4, Pentium M, Core 2 Duo...etc. But most of time, it will only be electrically compatible with one kind of Socket 478 cpu, depending on motherboard ability.
Usually, Socket 479 are used to replace Socket 478C used for Pentium M, that why most of people think that Socket 479 is for Pentium M. But sometimes, it is used for other kind of Socket 478, like on your laptop. So, I advise you not to try to put a Pentium M into it, because there are few chance it works, and few chance it damage your hardware (cpu and/or motherboard).
Pentium 4-M 538 has FSB533, whereas your cpu is FSB400. That's most likely why it didn't work. Best FSB400 cpu is the Intel Pentium 4 Mobile 2,6GHz, so it is most likely the best upgrade for your laptop. _________________ Register on x86-guide.net to manage and share your collection on-line !

Thank you very much for the advice! Could you provide the exact name of that 2.6GHz cpu?
Is it this one?
Intel Mobile Pentium 4-M 2.6 GHz - RH80532GC064512 (BXM80532GC2600D)
I was of course hoping to find a cpu with more cache than 512K but if that's the absolute highest I can go with this laptop then that is fine. I will probably still get one if I can find one.
Will I notice a worth while gain in performance versus the stock Celeron?
Thanks again for any help! |

Yes, it'll be better than celeron.
You'll notice a difference, from just good to a lot better depending on what you do. |

Thought so.
Also, Mixeur, I found this processor which says it's a Socket 479 (mPGA479M) and also a Socket mPGA478C if I read it right.
Intel Pentium M 765 RH80536GC0452M (BXM80536GC2100F)
If this one works it would be quite an upgrade. Otherwise I will just go with the Intel Mobile Pentium 4-M 2.6 GHz - RH80532GC064512 (BXM80532GC2600D) that I mentioned earlier, if it works that is. I apologize for being annoying and if I've been unclear. I've already blown one motherboard and I don't really want to blow another. |

Intel Pentium M 765 is a mPGA478C, yes. But there are 99 % of chance that you mother board only accept mPGA478B.
And highest is in this category is Intel Mobile Pentium 4-M 2.6 GHz - RH80532GC064512 (BXM80532GC2600D).
I don't think you'll see big difference, but well, it depends on what you do with your computer. _________________ Register on x86-guide.net to manage and share your collection on-line !

Great! The Pentium 4-M should be fine.
Now the question is, where can I find one? I've looked on Ebay and did a Google search but haven't found one yet.
Thank you for all your help! |
