|
|
I was looking through my 486 collection today and noticed that over half my DX2-66 and a few DX-33 chips appeared to be fake. The things that caught my attention were slightly different font on the engraved print and the location and style of the (R) next to the Intel logo. On the genuine chips the R is placed at the top of the L in Intel and has a curved right hand leg. On the suspected fakes, the R is placed at the bottom of the L in Intel and has a straight righthand leg. THis style of R also appears on my fake Pentium chips.
Also, on one of the fake DX-33s, the white DX logo was easily removed with a bit of methylated spirits, something that even hard scrubbing on a genuine chip won't do.
Does anyone know anything about fake 486s? In the attached photos, the genuine is on the left and the suspected fake is on the right. |

Chook,
checked my collection for the (R) placement and about a third of my 486s have the (R) placed down low.
Also checked chipdb.org and found the same thing there
so (R) placement seems hit n miss up until the DX4, where from then on it seems to be always placed down low
the poor white print is something i have come across in half of the AMD 486s i have picked up... mainly DX2s. Maybe intel had the same problems on the production line with cheap inks
but also can be a sign of a fake
i would be looking at the print sharpness and if it is even, more than if it was durable _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

"Nice" fakes! For me its the poor printing that shows its a fake. Nothing much is known. I have another fake 486 with a similar print.
Chook, could you provide two images of the fake chips to put in the Fake library? Also when photo is taken perhaps try to remove the fake print to reveal the real chip?

Cpuswe, is that a fake DX2? It has a low position R, yet it has the curved righthand leg. _________________ General failure reading disk in drive A

I picked up another suspected fake today. It looks pretty good, but the straight right leg on the (R) is typical of fakes.
