CPUID : 6.F.6 / Extended : 6.F
CPU Cache : L1 : 2 x 32 / 2 x 32 KB - L2 : 4096 KB
Core : Merom (65 nm) / Stepping : B2
Freq : 1995.08 MHz (166.26 * 12)

and my motherboard

MB Brand : alienware
MB Model : Area-51 m9750
NB : Intel i945PM rev 03
SB : Intel 82801GHM (ICH7-M DH) rev 0

Some m9750 systems were shipped with T7600, and that's the fastest socket M processor. So, you can upgrade to T7600, or T7600G - it's an unlocked version of T7600.

Can I not put in the T9xxx series processor? Someone told me I could. If not, why? What would I have to change in order to do that?

Socket related, give a check to "Socket M".
If the socket is different it can accomodate newer models, and there is no way you can change that, it's like diesel and regula gas engine. You buy a new car if you want to change.
