|
|
At this point a thought in my mind. I have some military stuff that uses the
MMC2 module at 600mhz. I can find the 850mhz units but cost versus increase is not that attractive.
I have removed the heat sink plate and find a micro-pga2 cpu under it with a
100mhz FSB. In my collection I have some SL53s 1Ghz micro-pga2 cpu's that will go right in place of the 600mhz chip.
The question is if anyone knows were I can get this swap done. I do alot of de-soldering, but to risk alot of scrape parts want to keep that as a last resort.
Any tips would be appreciated. |

| Not to disagree with you but the pin config is the same. The only difference is that the Micro-pga2 has a kind of adapter board on it that can be removed, then the chips are identical. |

Then try to desolder and resolder the cpu on the card
Failure due to the nature of the bga "socket" is high. Be careful.
Good luck! |

Thats correct. When I remove the light green board attached to the Micro-PGA2 cpu, its the same as a 495-Ball cpu. Thats why I am confident the swap will work. The only trouble I have is the resolder work, if I get impatient I will give a go but I just don't want to risk this with a heatgun.
So if anyone knows were I can get the job done, please let me know. I am located in The Netherlands ( Europe )

Theorically, swap is possible yes.
Pratically, it will be really hard without a special desolder equipement, a reballer equipment, and then an equipment to resolder the reballed chip on the MMC PCB (oven for example).
With a heatgun, you will damage the MMC PCB and or the µPGA2 cpu.
That's why I said it was not upgradeable.
To manage to do this, you have to find some electronics company specialized in BGA chips rework.
Good luck. _________________ Register on x86-guide.net to manage and share your collection on-line !

Thanks, I have been doing some research for companies but have not come up with much yet. I have like 10 of these units I want to upgrade so I hope I can find a place to do the work. It's not worth my time or money to TRY this at home!
But if it works I will have the only 1Ghz MMC2 modules.

I just got a batch of 850mhz MMC2's for a sweat deal. Now the mod can begin. Got some quotes on the re-solder work coming in and will post the progress as soon as it gets underway.

If you, or you find someone who will do BGA rework for cheap...
You'll be my new best friend! I'd give some organs to have a rework station... |

Well I got some prices for the swap to a 1Ghz chip. Also checking on putting a socket on the module so I can try out different CPU/Ram configs and do
some benchmark tests.
Want to wait a reply from Friendtech ( the Xbox 733 to 1.4 mod people ) and
see what they have to say.
Will post more when I know more.

Found the SL5TB cpu's via some chinese mafia on-line. He has like 200 of them so I want to wait a reply. These are the CPU's with the balls on them, that way I don't have to remove the bottom plate and reball the Micro-PGA cpu's. At this point I am just going to try to do the work myself, got some tools coming from Ebay and if all else fails I can always pay the money to have it done. But I want to give it try, it does not look to difficult but these my be my famous last words.
Will keep ja posted.
