ok so my buddy gave me this asus a7a266 board for free
now i have a athlon xp 2400 (2ghz@133)
it came with a athlon 1400 (10.5x133)

now the athlon was played around with, it fully worked
but when i installed the athlon xp, it was recognized as jus an athlon @ 1733mhz so the mutli is at 13 in jumper free mode. i was only able to boot up with the hard drive givin to me with this comp which has windows millenium edition. so dxdiag also only said athlon. also it said i have mmx n 3dnow but no see Sad

its revision is 1.10 and the bios is 1009, and asus says this board should support all athlon xps.

p.s. i messed around with it on jumper mode, got the multi to 15 but the fsb wouldnt change and was stuck at 90 resulting in 1350 mhz.

can anyone help me with this. thanks guy

there a few things that you need to know:
#1 if your athlon has locked multyplier ( L1 bridges are intact or burned on cpu)
#2 if your board supports this cpu (it seems that it does) then you need to check if board supports SOFT setup - where you can setup multiplier and fsb in BIOS setup, if you can -good, this is the easiest method) other method is to get same settings by jumpers, table should be available either right printed on PCB or you can download manual for your mobo.
If all of this tried and no result, try to remove CMOS battery and install it back, go to stpes 1/2 after.

p.s. you could continue your previous thread i think without creating additional thread (IMHO)

some OS don't recognize a cpu change without reloading the OS... so hopefully it is not that issue Crying or Very sad

seems to be more of an issue when an OS is installed when a older CPU is on the board, then you putting in a newer CPU with additional features that are disabled/enabled by the OS. So OSs can only make these features available at the time of install.

May not be the problem.. but keep it in mind.

if he/she gets correct settings (multiplier(ratio) and fsb) pc would show correct speed at POST screen, before OS loading.

p.s. milleniem -junk big time, i have never installed it on ANY client or my pc, NEVER. used either W98SE or W2K, period. On this particular config XP PRO would live good.

p.s.

i rephrased what i meant.. more to do with features on the cpu that are driven by the OS.

Yes i agree.. the correct speed should come up at boot

hmm, i just tried the battery i totally forgot about that. no luck.
umm from what i remember my athlon is locked. but one thing i noticed when i was fooling around with it was that in jumperfree mode: fsb 133 and mutlyper 13 = 1733. but 134 x 13 = 2119mhz :S whats up with that??.

either way, if its locked should it just keep locked at 15? instead of let the motherboard force it to 13?

and has anyone found anything to which i can update the bios without installing a floppy disk drive n tearing my house apart looking for that one floppy disk? im thinking updating bios might help

i know its not a fake thought cuz in my gigabyte ga7xz it reads it as athlon xp t-bred in cpuz but at 1500mhz cuz that motherboard doesnt support 133mhz fsb. which is why i was really hoping this a7a266 wouldnt give me that many problems as it is doing

what is your cpu spec reads, post it here, also, if your cpu is locked what bridges are burnt on L1 area?
as far as i remember (correct me if i am wrong) if ratio is locked, it is locked, you wont be able to change it, so way to go would be SOFT setup, just loked at the manual it is called JUMPER FREE setup:
set DIP all to OFF position and JEN to 2-3 pins short. then go the bios, see what ratio/fsb it will show you ( dont change it to manual if it will let you)

p.s. PAGE 19 MANUAL link above.
