In an effort to finally get up to 40fps in Crysis at ultra high resolution I just got a second 4870 card to crossfire on my gaming rig. I now average 40.67fps in the cpu benchmark. The rig is a few years old now but the second card and a new CPU fan which allowed me to bump the chip up to 2.95ghz have given it a 50% boost in performance over its previous configuration. In order to do this I had to go at the rack mount server case I use with an angle grinder to redesign the hard drive bay and intake fan system for higher throughput. I am not sure what I will do in the future for upgrades as my case doesn't tolerate graphics cards longer than 9.5" and there are no rack mount cases that seem to meet my needs that do. Anyhow, enjoy the pics.

Here are a few of the stats on the machine:
core 2 quad 6600
2x Visiontek 4870 cards
Asus maximus formula board
Sound blaster Xfi extreme gamer
4 gigs corsair
Wd 1tb re3
Wd 1tb black
Pc Power and Cooling 750W ps
Lg dvdrw

I like it.

Was it a cheaper solution than a 5xxx series model?
What are you going to do with Crysis 2? Lol

The second 4870 cost me $80 used. It is exactly the same as the first one I bought new just as it came out. I think new at that time they were $270. Since I have the original receipt and they are both Visiontek's I figure they are both lifetime warrantied. Even though I typically upgrade fairly regularly the warranty matters a good deal to me since my hand me down computers go through two different people before they finally are retired. Because of this they have to last a good 10 years.

Toms hardware seems to be of the opinion my 2 4870's in Crossfire would best a 5870 alone and are on par with a Geforce 480. I'm not sure about all that but those cards are quite a bit more expensive and don't fit in my case. Certainly two 4870's used at $80 a piece today would make one hell of a rig for $160 and smoke anything even at twice the price.

Since Crysis 2 is also going to be released on console I very much doubt it will even be as demanding as Crysis. Nothing has been since Crysis release and that was more than 2 years ago. Eventually something will push me but given most high budget games are released for the console and are therefore pretty mild resource wise I'm not sure when that will be.
