After looking around the internet I am surprised that there isnt more said about glossy screens and I am also surprised at the lack of aftermarket solutions / new laptop screen choice.
I took a look in my local computer and office stores.. every single laptop on display had a glossy screen. Some were insane... they looked like mirrors when powered down. Walking into one store, they had a row of laptops facing the front door.. they looked terrible. I asked the sales monkey on the floor why, and he said they are all like that now. |

Most notebooks have the glossy screen now.
Glossy screens are brighter than matte, which helps drive sales.
I went from a matte screen to a glossy screen. At first, it was annoying, but I got used to it. It is still a problem if I try to use the notebook with a lamp above/behind me. |

But glossy screens look soooo good on notebooks -
if switched off!!!
I suspekt the only right to exist for glossy
screens is that it really drives the sales.
If somebody is fed up with a glossy laptop
early (what is quite likely) there will be bought
a new one with a proper matte screen soon...
Many say: BUT SUCH A GREAT CONTRAST!
AND SUCH A SHARPNESS!
And I say yeah, honestly, what a crap of picture-quality
if I see my dang white tshirt in the screen
all the time. Cool, now I turn the brightness to maximum
so the CCFLs are done in two or three years.
If my eyes do not already hurt because of the brightness
of three suns they will surely do by trying to focus every one
of that stripped-to-the-bone-hypersharp pixels.
I am not a choleric but when I see a glossy
screen I`m getting upset at once
Glossy screens are in my opinion one of the
biggest crimes in computer history. _________________ Ordem e Progresso |

I recently bought my first own notebook. I intentionally bought a used one, although it was more expensive than some of the new ones, because I wanted to have a good display.
But I don't regret it. It is a Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook E-Series (business notebook) with a 15.4 inch matte display with an impressive 1680 x 1050 pixels. |

Doccy, good point about the backlight life for CCFL. I think this is less of a problem now with LED backlight. I have no data, so I dont know if there is much saving in ccfl life when dimmed.. I do know after years of use the CCFL will go YELLOW.. so in that case, turn up the backlight!
It is true, the picture on the super glossy sony is very good when compared to all my other LCD ( all matte ), but I have little or no reflection on the mattee screens so I can stare at them all day. The glossy is not so good to look at for long periods with the backlight up.
Marcin, dont worry, I am sure it will be ok. Compare a matte screen to a glossy and the glossy screen does look very much better. With the right romm lighting, and LCd backlight setting I think the picture will look fine. There are also cheap aftermarket filters you can add. I have one on order and I am hoping it will cut the reflection down a bit.
I am just surprised manufacturers dont have a filter as an option or maybe included in the box to slip over the screen. |
