Newbie - know very little about processors.

Bought ASRock motherboard with what was sold as an AMD Sempron '2.8Ghz' processor but I'm suspicious. I'm reluctant to extract the chip to get the part number except as a last resort. Shopkeeper claims it has 'Sempron' on the top of the chip and showed me the package. CPU-Z (V.1.28.1 March 2005) software shows this...

Name : AMD Athlon MP
Code Name :Thoroughbred
Socket A
Specification : AMD Athlon XP
Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1
Ext Family 7 Ext Model 8 Revision B0
Instructions : MMX (+) 3DNow!, SSE

Core Speed : 1198.8Mhz L1 Data 64K
Multiplier : x 12 L1 code 64K
FSB : 99.9MHz Level 2 : 256K
Bus Speed : 199.8MHz

Can anyone positively ID the above?

Is 1.2Ghz the max speed recommend by AMD? or should I adjust the jumpers on the board? I'd rather be slow and safe but I do want to get the BEST safe speed!

Thanks for any response.

if you were told that was a sempron, then you were ripped off.

thats how a sempron should show up.

like cpu-z says, you have a thoroughbred.

if the multiplier is right, then its a thoroughbred 1900+, which should run at 1.6ghz. your FSB is underclocked and should be at 133mhz

you can bump the fsb up in the bios to 133mhz, and the cpu will be running at its proper speed, however, if you paid for a 2.8ghz sempron (which doesnt exist, mind you, a sempron 2800+ runs at 2.0ghz) then take it back and get what you paid for or get your money back

Thanks, skold. I'll check out the FSB setting.

I thought the price was good (240 GB pounds for board, tower case, psu, fan, cpu+sink+fan) I'm convinced the shopkeeper believed it was a Sempron. I'd already been back to query the clock speed and it seemed he was not much more knowledgeable than I. I wonder if he's brought some dubious, falsely-marked, chips from a supplier. All I asked for was a value processor of 2Ghz or better. I'd never even heard the name 'Sempron' at that time. My last processor was an Athlon at 1.2Ghz from some years ago so I was surprised that my 'upgrade' was still only 1.2Ghz!

I might take a look at the top of the chip myself out of curiosity but I'm a bit reluctant as with my last processor I had a real struggle to get the heat sink on because there was no clearance to reach the clips and I was scared of damaging other components using a screwdriver as a lever! Maybe this board won't be so bad.

Hey, the above 'Guest' is me, Mosimer, of course. I had assumed I was automatically logged in as requested and now I can't see how to re-edit the above. On other forums I'm used to just being rejected if I try to post without logging in. This is the first I've used that let's guests post.

it usually helps to tape the power supply out, i find, so you have enough leverage to take the heatsink off
