so i just bought a computer for 15 dollors Smile

now i had doubts it wouldnt work, so i plugged it n turned it on, fans working, main chip on the board warms up, so does the heatsink on the cpu, and the graphics card

its a 2.66ghz / 533fsb / 512kb L2
1 gb ddr pc3200 (2x512)
ati radeon 7500 64mb ddr card

it seems to work, except i got no post, so i opened the case, unplugged everything, and then only plugged in the 2x2 12v connector to the motherboard, the atx connector, 4 pin molex connector to the mobo, and then tried it again, same thing - no post
so i reset the cmos, no post, then i took out the battery turned it on and it gave me a long beep that repeats every few seconds, what code is that?

is it dead? bad ram? bad graphics card?

thanks for the help guys

Google is your friend: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/148715-12-p4g8x-beeping

Also get one of these things (can also be found on e-bay) http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.25102 can save you A LOT of trouble finding mobo problems

thank you, it turns out one of the memory modules is bad,
one last question, is it possible to mix different ddr ram cards? for instance, i have 3 512mb cards, pc 3200, 2700 and 2100, can i somehow not use dual channel and have 1,5gb ram? the manual didnt help me much since i cant understand there configuration shit.

yes, you can mix various speeds, however,

#1 its not that fact that you will successfully boot, for that purpose you will need to try to understand whats written in your manual.
#2 even if you will boot, no dual channel will be available (same speeds/same capacity needed)
#3 even if you mix, say, 3200 with 2100 - ram speed will be 2100 AND only in case your 3200 stick can downclock (most of them do, but not all)

p.s. technically speaking speed of PC2100 would be 266MHz When bandwidth will be ~2,1Gb/s = 2100 Mb/s (2133)

p.p.s. PC3200~200Mhz Doubled =400MHz
PC2100~133MHz Doubled =266MHz

corrections are welcome.

ok so i tried it, and tried to understand the manual a bit to.

now ive got 2gb (4x512) in there, 3 are pc3200 and one is pc2700, but they only work in pc2100 anyways. now on startup it shows ive only got 1gb, in task manager ive only got 1gb installed aswell, and also in system properties. but in cpu z ive 2gb installed. any idea? am i actually using 2gb or just 1?

from bios, ive noticed that the motherboard wont read slots b1 and b2 which is why it only shows 1gb and not 2, any tips?

try:
#1 in BIOS checkmark (in memory config) - " BY SPD" / AUTO
1.1 reset configuration data if such option exists.

#2 try this with at least 2x512x3200 sticks if works, add another 512x3200 if works, try adding 2700.

p.s. i bet its 2700 stick that messes config up, use MEMCHECK/MEMTEST to check sticks for errors. you can get it in all LIVE LINUX CD versions. go to www.distrowatch.com to download any live cd for free.

i thought the same, but its not the 2700, even if i just use one stick in either b1 or b2 slots, or use 2 sticks in b1 and b2 the system does not post, as if no ram is available, if i use one stick in a1 and one stick in b1, only a1 is read.

and also i have no idea what linux even is besides its an os, or how to use it, but i will try pc wizard 2010 memtest and nvidia's memtest.

and post the results.

hmm.

eyght, this making me go and find manual and read it too Cool

will update as soon as...

update: if someone else wants to read manual, here is support page (figured its not Deluxe mobo)

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=P4G8X&SLanguage=en-us

update: here is most important info in regards memory installation.

#1 this mobo only supports (officially) 1600/2100 memories
#2 it does not support double sided (chips on both sides of a stick) x16 (chips) dimms
#3 it does not support 3 dimms config.

so here are solutions:
use either 2 (A+B SLOT or C+D SLOTS) or 4 (SLOTS A+B+C+D) sticks.

P.S. maximum speed would be 2100.

think i should be a dumbass and try to update to bios version 1007.xx which is only for the deluxe and hope itll fix the problem Confused

update :

well ive figured out that much, but all of my sticks are double sided, so if anything it shouldnt read ram at all, and lets say it only reads one side, hinting to why i only have 1gb of ram, it would say i have 512mb if i took 2 stick out, which it doesnt. it just simply read a1 and a2 slots and not b1 and b2 slots. it the post it says 1gb ddr sd ram single channel as well.

p.s. Update:

close thread
problem solved. thanks everyone for the help tho
