hi folks,

got a really nice vertical gyro from 1953 donated. but to see it inside
i have to destroy the cover. gyro's are some really high precision mechanical
instruments and i think that would be very nice to look at.
what do you think: should i leave it in original condition or should i open it?

Great find, congrats!
If i would be in your place i'll definitely open it to reveal a true inner beauty of precision mechanism.

Looks like a fake to me, ha ha ha just kidding. I would probly find a way to open it up neatly, to expose the inner workings, its not like anyone would ever need to use it again as i would assume we have much more precise instruments to use. I bet my cell phone has a more accurate gyro in it. Maybe not i dont know for sure but I would think so.

This one is so big I'll throw my 2cents in...

I'll wait at least a couple of weaks, to let that "I have to open it or not" thought go away.

After that time I'd come back and rethink about it, and then decide.

Personally I would like to open it and see what's inside, but maybe some engi here will tell what to expect from a gyro dated 1953.

I need a beer, this one was exhausting...

Find out how it would work first.. obviously there isnt going to be much electronics as we know it today inside.

Here is a result of a quick search...

http://www.answers.com/topic/vertical-gyro

(scroll down a bit)

I expect there to be a heater inside as well, like a simple resistor.

Magnets and coils of wire, the connections go to a display of some sort. Just guessing here... cant see what else they would do.

Not sure what else you would find by opening it up, but for sure you can bet that oneday in the future someone will be looking for that exact item. Wink Maybe Captin Kirk and engineer Scotty coming back from the future...

ah excellent!... way more complicated than I thought.. so it would appear possible to open it up and put it on display.

the appendix, starting 1a, in your second link explains it perfectly.

Reading on I never heard of a CARBON PILE REGULATOR .. haha.. love it.

I love old electronics.. just reading sections of that old manual you can see how much we take for granted today.. just jump in your car and turn the key...sink you fat ass into an airplane seat, stare at the breasts of the sexy airline hostess while eating peanuts and not caring really how much design has gone into the airplane and the infrastructure to get you to the other side of the world in a few hours.

*lol* it was no bomb. still alive Smile

i cut the banding. was not really difficult because of the very soft metal.
looks really amazing inside, like a time-machine or the big gravity gyro
from the movie "event horizon" Smile
