Hi everyone. So I just purchased an IBM Think Centre with motherboard FRU 41X0436 socket 775. I has a 3 GHZ Intel 4 CPU. I want to upgrade my cpu and I've looked at all 775 CPU's. The highest the Pentium 4 series goes is to 3.8. My question is, I've seen dual core CPU's that are also socket 775, but listed as lower GHZ. Being that they're dual core, could I replace my Pentium 4 with a dual core, and if so, would the dual core be faster?

i used to have a few thinkcentres and none of them supported anything than P4 cpus...

Whats the exact model number (either bios string or label back/side or bottom of the pc) ? --> hardware maintance manual would tell about available options, very easy for ibm to find one on their web site.

But like i said - none of my thinkcentres supported anything than p4

find your model here, go to support docs - find HMM.

This motherboard was used in IBM Thinkcentre A52. I have google that is propably Intel i945 so there is a chance to support Core 2 Duo early models.

- it also used in M52 series.

here is example:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-60411

no word about dual core...
...eventhough chipset itself DOES SUPPORT dual core:

http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/chipsets/945g/945g-overview.htm
"...Supports Intel® Core™2 Duo processor, Intel® Pentium® D processor, Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology and all other Intel® Pentium® processors and Intel® Celeron® processors in the LGA775 socket, with scalability for future processor innovations..."[/u]

I decided to go find the manual and i did find it:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/25483387/IBM-ThinkCentre%E2%84%A2-A52-M52-Hardware-Maintenance-Manual-HMM
went through all models - NONE OF THEM SUPPORT DUAL CORE

supports only P4 / PD - thats it.
