Hi everybody,
I ve just bought this new 2 x Xeon 2.4Ghz for my new workstation. During post the cpus are shown as:
Main Processor : Intel Xeon(tm) 1.80GHz (100x18.0)
Logic Processor: Intel Xeon(tm) 1.80GHz (100x18.0)
CPU Brand Name: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.40GHz
Even in Windows XP system properties the info I get is:
Xeon(TM) CPU 2.40GHz 1.81GHz, 512 Mb of RAM.
Anybody knows why this is and what is the real cpu speed? Many thanks. |

2.40ghz is the real speed of the cpu, and is part of the 'model' that the cpu displays when its asked for it (the whole 'Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.40GHz' is the model string)
basically your cpus are underclocked. since intel multipliers are locked, that narrows your search down considerably! theyre running at 100mhz fsb x 18, which gives you the 1.8ghz youre seeing. theyre really supposed to be running at 133mhz fsb x 18, which would give you 2.4ghz.
so, go into your bios and increase your fsb to 133mhz, and your xeons will be running at the proper speed. |

I ve done it.
When I changed the CPU clock to 132 which is the maximum it did not change in post so I put it back to 100 and changed CPU Clock Ratio to 24 frpm 18 and its now working.
Many thanks again. |

odd!
im no expert on xeons, maybe intel leaves the multipliers unlocked on them since theyre high end chips.
oh well, im glad you got it working! |

Maybe not if the Xeons have 400 MHz FSB. It's possible the multiplier is locked for overclocking, not underclocking.

| Tis true. I build Xeons at work. They will underclock quite OK. |
