I want to upgrade my pentium 4 531 3.0ghz cpu to pentium dual core 1.8 ghz. Due to my limited budget I can't go to Core 2 Duo @ 800 FSB. I usually do net surfing, music & video downloads, photo editing using adobe and playing on line games. I have 2 gigs of DDR-400, 256mb 128 bit Nvidia FX5500 AGP card, 7200rpm SATA HDD, WinXP Pro SP3 OS. With these usual tasks, do my current pentium 4 be just adequate to perform them? Please help..

You mean E2160 ? If yes then on stock speed you will get a little increase of performance in single thread applications. They have good opinions about overclockable so if you are familiar with OC then propably you will be very happy from purchase. 2,9-3,0GHz is easy to get if other components are good enough too.

Ahhh and I have to ask. What exactly model of motherboard you have ? That you have Socket 775 doesn't mean you can put all Socket 775 CPUs there.

@max3
There are motherboards with AGP and Socket 775 and even with Pentium D (Dual Core) support. I have had one few weeks ago, name of it : ECS SF2 661FX.

Yeah, I have an old Biostar board ( P4M800 M-7 rev8.0 ) with a 775 socket, single channel memory mode only, an AGP slot, and supports the e2140/60/80 CPU.

my mobo is asrock conroe 865GV LGA 775 with AGP slot. I don't do overclocking. my mobo can only support up to 1.8ghz pentium dual core & 2.0 ghz core 2 duo e4400 according to their website. A complete overhaul is too expensive for me, this is the only upgrade path possible.

[OFF]
i suppose there is quite a bit of "high" engineers Cool
just thinking why would someone want to buy such mobo...

new mobos are so cheap...newer pcie video cards, even lower graders are not much behind of their best agp cards... and having single channel memory kills all the upgrade on the spot.

anyways thats just a thoughts.

I would of thought getting different video card, especially if you do photo editing in adobe, but there wont be a much of a noticeable difference, c2d cpu would give you noticeable increase, i will be honest, with such tight budget i would just stick around for a bit more and later just get a new system...with ddr2(3)/sata2(3) and of course new processor and video card, or may be considered getting older dual cpu board there is a whole bunch of barebones on ebay for like under 150/100 bucks
