I have a quiet heatsink and fan which cools a Pentium 1GHz but want to use it for my Athlon 1GHz CPU. Will the fan and heatsink keep the Athlon cool without overheating. Using a KT7 Raid Abit motherboard.
Does the Athlon run much hotter then the Pentium 1GHz CPU ? Will it work without causing any damages to the computer i.e motherboard.
Thanks in advance |

That AMD CPU runs much hotter than PIII. Upload a picture of cooling system and I will tell you if that is enough.
Or you can try by yourself : mount cpu + thermal grease + heatsink and eneter to BIOS just after computer starts. I'm sure there is Hardware monitoring including CPU temperature. If temp. without load will be under 45-48C than should be OK.
Motherboard cann't be damaged by overheated CPU - only CPU will die in worst case. _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

Thanks for the reply. I'll post back tomorrow as I may not have time today. Victor. |

if fsb is 133mhz then maybe, if its 100mhz then you should run okay. i would still recommend something better, copper is a good suggestion |

this "might" work, but to be on safe side i would certainly would find a better heatsink with copper base. _________________ its here. |

I use the AMD retail HSF's for those, the ones with the AMD hologram on the center of the fan. These are designed to work with the Bartons and are rated at dissipating the heat that these produce (which is about 70W, roughly double what the fastest P3's produce).
Another favorite solution of mine (if I want to use a Coppermine instead of a Tualatin) is to use one of those Coppermines with the integrated heatspreader and fit a cheapish very large Alu heatsink to it so I can use a more silent fan |
