|
|
I sold and sent an item to a UK buyer and I just received this message from him:
"Hi John
My parcel is at Royal Mail and won't be released until I pay them £15.32 ($25.03USD).
I paid more than enough for the item and I haven't got the money to get my parcel. There was nothing on your page to say I would have to pay more money for postage, I will have to take it up with PayPal."
Isn't this charge a "customs" tax? I don't know how extra "postage" fees can be added by the receiving country...
Can Ebay hold me responsible for this fee?
Anyone had this happen to them?
Tks,
John _________________ My collection list (growing) http://johnorun.x86-guide.com/en/collection.html |

No. It was a very light chip wafer that sold for $68. Package weighed only about 3 oz.! _________________ My collection list (growing) http://johnorun.x86-guide.com/en/collection.html |

If the declared value was for $68 , then its import taxes. And you should not be held responsible for it. But i know a few people have been stuck with the bill after the customer contacted paypal and file a non recieved package claim.
If they live in a country that does this they should know in advance that they will get hit with the charges before they even bought from you. _________________ "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." A.E. |

I do believe that parcel force (The UKs package service) is allowed to add on an extra 'handling charge'
again this is not something you are responsible for, this is solely the UK ripping off their subjects. _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

Thanks for the help.
Do you think Paypal will hit me for this "tax"? _________________ My collection list (growing) http://johnorun.x86-guide.com/en/collection.html |

@johnorun
Have you declared parcell/item value for full ammount or included print from the auction ? _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

Marcin, I printed the Ebay shipping label which shows the full amount paid as the value for customs. _________________ My collection list (growing) http://johnorun.x86-guide.com/en/collection.html |

I'm sorry but that was enough to put a tax on it. For your future sales I suggest you do not include any papers in parcell and declare minimum value and mark as GIFT and everyone will be happy _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

I usually do what Marcin suggested above, and so far I didn't have any buyers complaining of customs fees. The custom taxes are always responsibility of a buyer unless you state in your description that the price includes all applicable fees and taxes. I don't think the buyer will succeed with his PayPal complaint if he mentions customs taxes.

Thanks for the feedback.
I'll take your suggestions for my future eBay sales. I hate to see buyers of used items get ripped for more taxes or fees!
I was afraid that using "gift" on the package would cause problems but I guess there is no way for Customs to verify the cost of a used vintage item, like chips anyway. _________________ My collection list (growing) http://johnorun.x86-guide.com/en/collection.html |

THe only catch is if you want it to be insured, then you have to have a declared value. And if selling to strangers I would always suggest insuring it. _________________ "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." A.E. |

in the future , you can ask the buyer if he want to declare the full value
and let him take the risk himself
some people does not care about this
such
people from australia seems to have free import tax when < 900 USD

btw the emails might be helpful if anything goes wrong later |
