Ebay can be an excellent source to determine "value"
of miscellaneous scrap processors and chips. Pricing there
can often be at over over the gold content of the cpu's or
chips being sold for various reasons. You will need to determine
the weight of your "like" chips and see how many make up
a pound as they seem to be listed and sold by the pound on ebay.
The processors and chips that I salvage from computers that
have no resale value I offer here so that they may "live on"
in someones collection. What doesn't sell here goes off to
Mr. Scrap Man for it's precious metals content.
I am not advocating the scrapping of chips but it's just
a fact of life for even the most ardent collector - what am
I going to do with by broken chips or damaged chips or
chips with little "collectability"?
Anyway - good luck with your i486's. They should sell well
as the ceramic cpus with gold bottoms have good gold content
and probably all gold pins. |

No. Common today is uncommon tomorrow _________________ My Want List: http://www.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22729

I can't undestant scrap prices.
If 1 troy ounce of gold have value of 1500 USD,
1 g would be ~48 USD, and without taking into account
the cost of recycling and extraction, 1 cpu of 486 class must contain
at least 0.1 g of pure gold, can it be true? I highly doubt. |

486ers have typically 0.1g of gold content.
Pentium Pro's ~1.0g, hard to believe
but seems to be true!!!!!!!!! _________________ Ordem e Progresso |

The consensus yield on the Pentium Pros is actually more like
0.3 grams per CPU. Roughly speaking, it takes five PPros to
make a pound in weight and probably 1.5g of gold by weight.
So, it would take about 104 PPros to make a troy ounce of
gold or 31.1g. That would roughly mean that each PPro should
have a gold value of $14.42 each if spot gold was at $1,500.00.
Ebay - go figure!!! It is NOT easy to extract all the gold from
the pentium pros as the lid is tungsten but folks sure are giving it a try. |

AMD 486 – 0.12g
Texas Instruments 486 - 0.1g

| The Pentium Pro lid / heat spreader is a tungsten copper alloy. |
