My PC has about 6-7 years. I thought it was time for me to change the thermal paste so I did.

Powered it on, entered BIOS and...surprise, surprise, my CPU was at 900Mhz instead of ~1,9Ghz.

My motherboard is a Gygabyte GA-7N400S (here's the manual), running on a 256MB RAM, Asus A7000 video card.

Now, from what I've read on the web, it seemed that all I had to do was to clear my CMOSș got out my BIOS battery, inserted for a few seconds a jumper on my 2-pin CLEAR CMOS chip on the motherboard, nothing.

Then, I saw a guy stating my CPU somehow downgraded, kindaț of an opposite of the overclock and it seemed that all I had to do was raise the FSB. I tried it at 100, I got 1200 Ghz, then Ițve tried the last option which was 200, restarted the PC and now.... it just wonțt boot. I hear no click, no beep.

What the fugde can I do now? Ițve got a mini-thesis to solve on this computer, Ițve been trying to find some solutions for he past 5hours.... WHAT can I do now?

Pff... I've tried again. Unplugged the PC, removed the BIOS battery for ~15 minutes, cleared the CMOS with a jumper, plugged and... now it works again!

But still at 900Mhz. How come before I removed the CPU the frequency was ~1,9Ghz? Was this CPU already overclocked when bought? Anyone?

You set a too high FSB for your CPU so now it won't boot
you must read on your CPU the exact code (like this AXDA2600DKV3C), the last letter is your FSB
C = 133Mhz
D = 166Mhz
E = 200Mhz (but there isn't an Athlon XP 2600 with 200Mhz FSB!)
now you must remove the battery on the motherboard for some minutes so all the settings return in the safe mode, restart the PC and enter in the BIOS setting
set the right time, date and FSB of the CPU, F10 for save all and your PC will be with the right speed.

Why is it there, then? The 200? The maximum I could go so far was, manually, 180 which recognised it as "2200+". I tried giving it 185 and... I got nothing again. Now, I'll wait another 10 min with the BIOS battery removed, clear CMOS again and let it be to 180.

I may not understand completely how these old AMD CPUs work but... it's not ok. I mean, AMD used to overlock them when bought? What's that?

!? on the manual I can read the only FSB you can set are 100, 133, 166, 200

please remove the heatsink and read the right CPU code so you can set the right FSB

Sou, you were not right, there isn't 200 for Ahton. It's an AMD Sempron though when I boot it clearlily tells me AMD ATHLON XP. The code is: SDA220DUT3D.

What's the right FSB for this, now?

yuo must set the FSB at 166 Mhz (333Mhz effective), it will be shown like an athlon 2200+ or less but it's correct, effective speed of your CPU is 1500Mhz
Athlon XP family and Sempron (only sock. A) family are the same CPUs
looks here
