In most cases it is a mask programmed
ROM behind custom numbers. If you really
want to know you could electrically compare
it with other ROMs of that time and try to read
it out.

There are some RAM chips custom marked as well.
Interesting detail: Head over print...

solved: i opened this chip, i had 2 of them. and it is an 3301. The curious
thing is that the intel printing shows 3301-B, i have never found this on
a die of an original marked 3301 chip.
the next different is that the markings are written on an other place on
the die.
