just an fyi guys, you cant pass on the paypal fees to buyers. if youre charging any fees, you have to charge them regardless of payment method.. if youre charging an extra 4% for paypal payments only, then someone can complain about you, and get you in a world of trouble Razz

It may be different in Europe. I know in some European countries credit card companies allow merchants to add surcharge to credit card payments. As long as Visa/MC allow PayPal to do it, PayPal should be ok if it's clients do it.

well

youre allowed to charge a surchage, and if you say 'for international payments' thats fine..

youd run into trouble though if you did something like

'money order - $5
check - $5
paypal - $6.30'

but if you did this:

'money order - $6.30
check - $6.30
paypal - $6.30'

then youre fine

i will check on whether or not that applies to european accounts though. i only deal with US and AU accounts mainly and i know its a big no no with aussie accounts too. europeans are wierd tho :p

yea, i just checked on this, and it's the same for every country. you should really modify those auctions.. you specifically say that youre charging an extra 4% for paypal fees.. which isn't allowed.

if someone reported you for this, this is what you'd get back in an email from us:

Quote:

PayPal offers our members access to the world's leading online payment service. As our network of members has grown, an increasing number of sellers of goods and services are accepting payments through PayPal.

Under Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express regulations and the laws of several states, including California, merchants may not charge a fee to the buyer for accepting credit card payments (often called a 'surcharge').

In order to comply with these laws and regulations, sellers may not charge a fee for accepting PayPal

This limitation does not prevent sellers from imposing a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services, as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge (in other words, the handling fee for transactions paid through PayPal may not be higher than the handling fee for transactions paid through other payment methods)

Sellers residing in the United Kingdom and listing items for sale on a UK-based website may impose a surcharge, but only under the following conditions:

Both the buyer and seller reside in the United Kingdom;

The purchase price is paid in pounds sterling;

The surcharge imposed by the seller is no greater than is necessary to recover the receiving fees incurred by the seller;

The seller clearly indicates to the buyer prior to the buyer's submission of a bid or (in non-auction transactions) prior to completion of the purchase that a surcharge will be incurred and the amount of the surcharge

if you change those auctions to say that you're adding a 4% handling fee for international shipments, then you'll be fine. its just the wording of it that'll get you into trouble

hmm, this is a stupid policy.

i only want to charge exactly, what i have to pay (with 4% paypal-fee i win nothing, paypal charges for internation payment 3,9% + 0,03,5 Euro)

and in europe there's a free of charge bank transfer possible via IBAN/BIC. I just want to give people the possibility to save money.

so in europe via IBAN/BIC you only pay 2,50 Euro. (btw. in my last auction only european people bought chips)

so i have to use next time higher fixed shipping prices if ebay makes that happy Evil or Very Mad

you're looking at it the wrong way

those fees are the cost of doing business on paypal

if you owned a store front and took mastercard and visa, and let people swipe them there, you'd have huge fees from visa and mastercard. which is their cost of doing business.

if you went into a store and wanted to buy something with your visa card, and they told you there was a 4% fee if you used your card, you'd tell them to screw off and go somewhere else, right?

its the same thing with paypal. its free to send money, but to receive it you have various fees. if you actually check on what the merchant fees are from visa and mastercard, paypals fees would seem very nice indeed Smile

anyhow yea, you're breaking that policy :X

I always charge a bit more for the shipping costs to cover the paypal fees...and everyone I know does the same. That's normal.

i always charge a $5 handling fee on every auction

thats perfectly fine

the only time youll run into trouble is if you specifically say 'im charging you an extra $X to cover paypals fees'

i take paypal, money orders, etc.. but i charge the $5 bit regardless. i also start all my auctions at 1 cent. even if they go for a penny im still getting five bucks, so im happy with that, and so is ebay/paypal

seriously, you can keep charging the fee, you just need to re word it a bit, or you may end up in trouble.. im not trying to sound like a bad guy here.. if i was, id have put a note on your paypal account while i was at work :X

This is the reason, I won't buy anything at your auctions! That behaviour is not fair, but can be observed at many US and Canadian auctions.

id set the starting bid to $5 but people would outright ignore it then. i know i do.

id just set a reserve as well but theres a fee for that.

ebay needs to give employees no fee listings Very Happy

Just approach it from the opposite direction: Frontload the auction with shipping or packing fee and then offer a discount of 4% if seller can pay by cash, check or international MO. Gets the same thing done without mentioning paypal or CC directly. If buyer either has to, or wants to pay anyother way (i.e PP or CC) then no discount.
