I am trying to repair an old Digidesign audiomedia card for Mac (for fun not profit) It has a Motorola XSP56001ZL20 big white chip which I think is a CPU and DSP in one package - is that correct?

The host Mac says there is a bus problem at bootup when I think the Mac reads the cards in it's slots. I have checked the associated RAM chips, the ROM seems to read OK, everything looks fine. When I remove the XSP56001ZL20 the Mac boots correctly but doesn't see the card.

So am I correct in thinking the most likely cause of the problem is this XSP56001ZL20 has expired? Do they expire? How easy is it to get a replacement?

It is a software problem. You have to run the Mac in 24 bit adressing mode to use this card. Also you probably have to format your startup drive with the standard Apple Drive setup. Other Formatters may install drivers which are not 24bit compatible, hende the bus error on boot,

cheers
