Flea market finds

My Girlfried and me visit some sundays flea markets.

Sometimes i found some common P3, P4 e.t.c.

Sometimes i found (and will find) some old Hardware. Here is the first find:


HP Jornada 820e. With original box, missing Poweradapter and with Serial-Kabel to connect it with the PC. Windows 7 can't handle the Win95 Software, but i have some old computers to test it at any time.

I made a individual Poweradapter to test it. I loosened some small screws (Torx 10) and it got a plus and minus cable. Now the poweradapter of my mobile HDD "feets" it with energy.

And it works. Its CPU is a StrongARM SA-1100 and a "Northbridge" SA-1101. I missed it to shoot a pic of the motherboard.

The battery seems ok.

The next find is a 386 Laptop. Alcatel 560NB/G

386SX-20
1MB RAM
60MB HDD
1.44MB FDD
640x480 Screen

I got found it on a flea market. Damaged Case, no Power Supply, but with 30x new 1.4MB FDD Floppys. Price 10€

At first i unmountet everything execpt the display to take a look into it. No damage seen. And i saw a FPU-Socket.

Has someone a 387SX-20 in PLCC for sale?

The next reason why i unmountet the whole motherboard was the problem with (or without) the poweradapter.

The HP Jornada 820e need only 12V and 1.5A with a round 2-Pin connector. I don't have the matching male-connector but two Pins are not that problem.

The Alcatel has a 8PIN (seems like RJ45 in huge) power connector with 12V and 18V. I tried to find out where the voltage is connected on the huge-RJ45, but there was no chance because there are no markings on the motherboard.

Next idea was the accumulator pins.

The Alcatel uses two accumulators with 9.6V and 1.250mA. First problem was that to get the accumulators. No chance to get them (and how to charge?) so i had the idea with a self-made poweradapter, connected to the original accumulatorpins.

Next problem: How to get stable 9.6V / 2A?

My dad used some weeks ago for another power adapter a 7809.

The next hour i made a provisional power adapter and tryed to boot the laptop.

The single 7809 has not enough power. Two mins of power and the metal cooler was hot. Later i saw, that the used 7809 has a max of 1.5A

The next problem was the floppy drive. It has a very special mini-FDD connector but the orginial floppy didn't turn. The belt was dead. And without a floppy drive i would never get the Laptop running.

My mom had some standart rubbers for the household. One of it was thick and long enough to replace the original belt:

In the foreground you can see the black original belt. In the background, near the motor, you can see the new rubber. And the floppy was running. I tryed to boot it, but it hangs after some seconds. Next problem: The data on the floppy was damaged.

My next try to start the laptop was the internal HDD. A conner 2.5" mobile IDE drive.

But the drive is sadly dead... I think it is a rare pice of computer technology.

The next days i try to boot it with a new bootable floppy disk, but for this one i have to mount a win98 computer with: a floppy disk drive!

Sometimes the Heads stick to the platter on those Connor Hard Drives.
Take the Hard Drive out , put it in your hand and twist back and forth violently. This sometimes releases the heads from the platter. Worth a try, nothing lost if it does not work.........Cheers

Intel N80387SX-20 SZ369
