Don't see a intro forum so I guess this is the best place to start.
I haven't been a collector but this forum has given me the bug. I'm just getting started scrapping computers and have broken down about 4,000 lbs. of lappy's and desktops. Mostly Dell crap but I've found some gems so far.

Can anyone identify these purple ceramics out of a DECserver 550. I paid much more than usual for that load of scrap, it was more of a favor to help my buyer get out of a jam, but it turned out great. Ive got 8 of each.

I don't see any info here on the Moto MC88100, are they in demand? I got 3 out of another server.
here is a pic with a DEC J11

I also scored 3 DEC Alpha Personal work Stations running the 21164 in 499 Sockets. One of the MoBo has 2 leads broken on a serial port but the other 2 boot.

I had no idea DIP chips had collector value Crying or Very sad I just scrapped a board with about 20 white ceramic 3/4 x 1/4 DIPs in sockets

I'm off to an auction this morning where I spied 2 AT&T servers under a pile of old white towers...treasure hunt.
I don't want my First post to be SPAM but I'm going to post up stuff 4 sale

LOL!!! This post got flagged as SPAM for to many links. I had to remove my fancy emotion icons. Twisted Evil

Welcome to the forum, I love the DEC Jaws chips, they are just sweet as heck looking, it wont be long before you start to keep most of what you find. Any white dips you come across should be checked out before being scrapped thats for sure, you never know what you might have ditched already but at least your aware of it now so thats good for the future.
As far as selling chips thats great too, if you keep the prices reasonable you will make alot of sales with this bunch of people in here.and that can help fund more auction buys which keeps things interesting for all. Very Happy

Went back to the yard I were got the Jaws from and dug through the gaylord they threw the all the server cards in before I bought the last of the servers. Bought 10 boards all with various purple ceramics and one J11.
Would the J11 be worth more still in the socket on the board?

Actually, it wasn't flagged as spam. We limit the number of external links for users with low post count. When they post more than three links, they get this message:

Quote:
Due to increased number of spam posts, we now limit the maximum number of links for new forum users to 3 per post. Please edit your message and remove extra links.

If not this, and several other measures in place the forum would be overrun by spammers...

Hi and welcome, you should show the boards with the J11. A single J11 goes between $20 and 50 on ebay, a board should be more valuable. Unfortunately sometimes the boards are that big and heavy that it is almost impossible to send them overseas.

And while scrapping, look for white dips as already said but also on other strange stuff. There are some zigzag pinned nice chips, chips with other ones on top (piggypack), very huge and heavy ones (MCM CPUs from IBM do more look like a hard disk that like a CPU, lol). If you are in doubt, take a picture and show:-)

One thing I like here is the Ebay database. Wink
Manufacturer: DEC
Family: J-11
Part number: J-11
Auctions: 21
Oldest auction: Sep 26 15:39:43 2010
Newest auction: May 23 06:06:58 2012
Minimum price: 11.5
Maximum price: 109.95
Average price: 57.42

Unfortunately I already depopulated the board of all the socketed chips. My scraper mentality kind of takes over. I'll try to take pics 1st from now on. I'll post some pics of it and one of my Alphas in the respective on going threads.

Welcome!
Pictures are always nice as eye candy. Scrapping gives you access to more good chips and boards than most of us. I look forward to seeing what you have to sell as well as pics of your "keepers".

Here is my chip collection so far

Got 4 of these Seagate ST4702N 702MB SCSI HDD / CDC Imprimis 94181-702.
5 5.25 disks for a whopping total of 702MB

Inside a 48v power supply

I've pretty much decided that I have too many hobbies to become a serious collector so I will be selling everything. I will document the interesting stuff and post it for you guys. My problem is most of this stuff is worth as much for scrap as what you guys pay for collecting. I really don't have the time to be selling a single gold DIP for $2 when my buyer gives the same and takes them all at one.
I would like to give back to the community but this my living. Maybe the solution would to be offer lots in the for sale section.
