I currently have an AMD Athlon X2 thats clocking 3.11 GHz (stock speed).

My CPU socket type is AM2.

I was thinking about upgrading CPUs, but AM2 is old news and the only new cpu I can find is AMD HD8550WCJ3BGH Phenom X3. Its triple core and 2.11 GHz stock.

How would this CPU compare to my current CPU? Any suggestions? I am using my computer for high resolution photo scanning and need it to be able to handle big scans with ease.

Does your application support multithreading? Your board supports quad-core Phenom X4 CPUs up to 9950. So, if your app can use multiple cores, then quad-core Phenom X4 processor would be better choice then triple-core 8550. If your application is old, then it may use only one core, and in this case it may be better to stay on your current processor (is it Athlon 64 X2 6000+?).
