Here I will post pictures of stuff as I go through some boxes. Over the last 30 years in the electronics and computer industry, I've accumilated (and tossed) quite a few "relics".
Here is an example.

I got this when I worked for a company that made tape drive read/write heads.
It's like a thick wafer of ceramic, about 4" dia, polished and has gold "traces" on it. I will try to get a closer picture of one of the traces.
Anyone know what this is?

Some tubes in boxes, some have the original prices on them. I wonder what they are worth now...

Hi,
nice things! Smile
Did you remove the laser tube from an early
laser printer or photocopier? These were
also used in early CD- and Laser Disc Players!
Considerung the shapes on the wafer they
look like flash-memories but only a macro
picture of them could clarify it!

They are not integrated circuits, they are actually wide gold traces. Without a way to make a "microphotograph" it is hard to show. I'll work on it though.
The wafer is actually about 2mm-4mm thick and made of a ceramic material or glass, rather than silcon.

Strange looking structures and definitely no flash-memory...
Maybe the bottom layer of a multitrack read/write head?
Not unlikely if you say you got this wafers at a tape read/write
head manufacturer (I guess they also made/make heads for
computer streamer drives).

Hi,
the nice Melles-Griot laser looks just like the HeNe gas laser tubes found in many vintage barcode scanners. I mean the large "flat" scanners used in many markets and shops, not the little hand-held devices. You can easily find a suitable power supply.
Usually the output power is roughly 8-10 mW; the visibile light is bright red (670/690 nm).
Laser printers usually have infrared laser emitters (diodes). The only laser printer I have seen equipped with a laser tube instead of a laser diode is a very old Xerox machine (1980, I think).
The wafer is indeed much more interesting.
It's really difficult to tell what it can be.
I have a little wafer, with similar (even tough not identical) patterns on it, won years ago on Ebay and marked as a "GaAs Amp sample".
