I am looking to upgrade the CPU in my Compaq v5115US, I have been looking at some info here about Socket 754 CPU's and found lots of info but here is what I am looking at: the CPU currently in this laptop has a metal top (I guess you would call it) like a Athlon CPU but it is a Turion 64 (ML-32). I have been looking on ebay for CPU's but none of them even "look" similar to what is in the laptop now. Will this cause a overheating issue because the other CPU's I am looking at will only contact a small part of the chip compared to the Athlon style huge metal top. It is strange that I can even find anything that even looks like this CPU.
Any help/comments would be appreciated! |

| The Athlons with the IHS (metal top) are slightly thicker than ones without. Sometimes in laptops, this difference in thickness will cause an issue with the interface between the processor and the heatsink (won't be able to reattach the HSF, or it will be loose when reattached). It depends on how the heatsink mounts. Sometimes they have enough play to work, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they will work, but the increased height may cause interference with the chassis or removable cover (if applicable) that covers the HSF. |
