Frequent Hangs!

Please help me out. I need an expert advice from those techies out there. I'm experiencing frequent hangs of my computer. The mouse cursor suddenly freezes at the middle of my web browsing.(I can no longer move it, even if I try re-inserting the usb mouse cable). I often resorted to frequent resetting just to continue browsing which I find very annoying. My friend told me that it was caused by a certain virus but I'm not sure about this. What's the cause of this? How can I fix this problem? Is there any command using the keyboard to be initiated to resolve this issue without resorting to resetting? Any advice shall be appreciated.
