Hi Guys,

Long time reader... first time poster here.

While disposing of a regular garden variety Compaq the other day, I took the CPU out to go in my collection, and I was surprised to see that it was an ES.

The SSpec is Q958ES and the date is week 51, 1998.

Would you mind sharing some knowledge with me? This is my first ES.

Why would Compaq have put this in a computer?

Is it rare? (more rare than other Engineering Samples?)

Would these have been multiplier locked?

Cheers

Matt

It should not be multiplier locked.

I have seen ES chips in Dells and HP/Compaq Servers.

I think once they validate them, they go ahead and ship them to make a bit more money.

They are about as rare as Pentium II processors, and less rare than Pentium/80486.

Thanks for the info guys.

This one will now take pride of place in my collection as my first ES!
