Can anyone explain this chip's place in the Motorola 68040 family? It is in a Next Computer system. Specifically, what is the significance of the 'Sample A'?

It's an engineering or qualification sample of the chip, not the final production version. As such, it may have some bugs that were eliminated in production chips.

| Interesting... It made it onto a production line anyway. It's in a system that was used by a university computer science department for years. |

If it was there from the beginning then it should be an early Next computer.
